Usually, “ownership” of AI-generated audio means a platform license, not automatic copyright. In the United States, the Copyright Office says audio generated entirely by AI is not copyrightable, a prompt alone does not make you the author, and only human-authored parts of a mixed work may be protected. Your practical rights therefore come from two places: the human contribution you can identify and the AI service’s plan terms.

What You Can Actually Own

Separate these questions before you release a track:

  • Copyright: A human-written lyric, recorded performance, arrangement, or substantially edited section may be protectable. Entirely AI-generated material is not, according to the U.S. Copyright Office.
  • Contractual permission: A service may give you a commercial license, a non-exclusive perpetual license, or a plan-specific right to publish. That permission can let you monetize audio even when copyright protection is limited.
  • Control of the source material: Stems, MIDI, WAV files, project edits, and your own recordings make it easier to show what you contributed and to move the work into another editor.

If you register a work containing more than a minimal amount of AI-generated material in the United States, the Copyright Office says you must disclose it and describe your human contribution.

How Major AI Audio Services Describe Your Rights

Service What Its Published Terms Establish Ownership Or Licensing Limitation
Suno Paid subscribers’ songs are yours to keep and use; the Pro plan includes full commercial rights. Free Plan does not include commercial rights. The published product details do not establish copyright ownership.
Eleven Music Tracks are cleared for broad commercial use. Commercial rights vary by subscription tier; the free plan is limited to personal use.
Loudly Loudly describes its music as royalty-free and commercially licensed, with a commercial license included. Licensing rights depend on the plan, and free generated tracks are limited to 30 seconds.
Mureka Downloaded tracks are described as royalty-free with full commercial rights across platforms and projects. The published details do not establish copyright ownership or whether every plan grants the same rights.
Musicful A downloaded track comes with a non-exclusive perpetual license, and Musicful says commercial use is allowed with a commercial licence certificate. Musicful retains ownership. Commercial use is limited to Standard/Pro plans; Free/Basic is non-commercial.
Songin.ai Paid-plan music has full commercial rights for uses including YouTube, Spotify, ads, and games. Free downloads are watermarked MP3 files for personal use only; multitrack stems require Premium.
Tunee Tunee says generated songs and videos have a full commercial license and that users keep 100% of the rights. Free users may use music only for personal projects with attribution. Tunee says it cannot guarantee copyright protection.
OpenMusic AI Tracks are described as royalty-free, commercially cleared, and supplied with a license for proof. Plan terms still govern downloads and commercial licensing; access is web-only.

“Commercial rights” in this table is permission promised by the service. It is not the same as exclusive copyright, and none of these published entries establishes that you receive exclusive ownership of the underlying model output.

A Safer Ownership Workflow

  1. Choose the release use first. Write down whether the audio is for a personal video, monetized channel, advertising, a client project, streaming, or a game.
  2. Select a plan whose stated license covers that use. Save the pricing and terms page, the invoice, and any licence certificate with the exported files.
  3. Make a human contribution you can document. Keep your original lyrics, melody sketches, arrangement decisions, recordings, edits, and timestamps. Prompts alone do not establish authorship under the U.S. Copyright Office’s guidance.
  4. Generate with an originality-focused brief. For example: “Create a 90-second instrumental in a tense electronic style, new melody, no quotation of existing songs, clear four-bar intro, and separate drums, bass, and harmony.” This asks for useful structure without requesting an artist’s identity or a recognizable song.
  5. Export and preserve the project evidence. Keep the final WAV or MP3, stems or MIDI when your plan provides them, prompt history, source recordings, and the plan active when you downloaded the track.
  6. Check the destination platform before publishing. Spotify supports DDEX AI disclosures and has announced protections against unauthorized vocal impersonation and mass-upload spam. YouTube requires disclosure for realistic altered or synthetic content that could be mistaken for a real person’s performance.

Voices, Covers, And Uploaded Audio Need Consent

Do not clone a person’s voice, imitate a recognizable performer, or upload a cover, sample, or recording you do not control unless you have the necessary permission. A commercial license from an AI service does not establish that you had consent to use someone else’s identity or source recording. Spotify says vocal impersonation is allowed only when the impersonated artist authorized it. For realistic synthetic performances, follow the destination service’s disclosure rule as well as the AI tool’s terms.

What To Put In Your Release File

  • The service, plan name, subscription date, and download date.
  • The exact prompt and the human edits or performances you added.
  • The exported master and any stems, MIDI, or source audio supplied by the plan.
  • The applicable commercial-license page or certificate.
  • A note identifying any AI-generated vocals, synthetic persona, cover material, or third-party sample and the consent supporting it.

When To Stop And Check The Terms

Pause before release if your use is outside the examples stated by the service, if a free plan is involved, if you need exclusivity, or if a client needs an ownership assignment. The entries above do not establish answers for those cases. Check the vendor’s current terms and the destination platform’s policy, then keep the version you relied on.
