Short answer: AI-generated music is not automatically protected by copyright in the United States. The U.S. Copyright Office says a work made entirely by AI is not copyrightable, a prompt alone does not make you the author, and copyright can cover human-authored parts of a mixed work. If you plan to release, monetize, or license a track, keep evidence of your human contribution and read the generator’s current license for the plan that made it.
What Copyright Protects In An AI Music Track
The key question is authorship. If an AI system generates the melody, lyrics, arrangement, vocals, and production from a prompt, the generated material itself may not receive U.S. copyright protection. Your prompt can guide the result, but the Copyright Office says prompts alone do not make someone the author.

A mixed track can contain protectable and unprotectable material. Human-written lyrics, a human-composed section, or substantial human arrangement may be protectable as that human contribution. Registration applicants must disclose more than a minimal amount of AI-generated material and describe what the human author contributed.
These are U.S. Copyright Office principles, not a worldwide rule. Copyright law and registration practices differ by country, and AI music terms change. For a commercial release or dispute, obtain advice for the relevant jurisdiction.

How A Copyright-Safer Workflow Looks
- Start with material you can identify. Write your own lyrics, melody fragments, structure, or production plan. Save dated drafts, MIDI, project files, prompts, and exported stems.
- Use the generator for a defined contribution. Ask for an arrangement, instrumental bed, vocal idea, or variation while retaining a clear record of what you supplied and edited.
- Edit the result yourself. Rework lyrics, timing, harmony, instrumentation, transitions, and mix decisions in a way you can describe. Human edits do not automatically make every generated element copyrightable, but they help establish the parts you authored.
- Check the exact plan license before release. Confirm whether the plan permits commercial use, downloads, client work, streaming, advertising, and distribution. A free tier may have different rights from a paid tier.
- Handle identity and source material carefully. Get permission before cloning or imitating a person’s voice. Do not upload samples, lyrics, or recordings unless you have the necessary rights. A platform’s commercial license does not grant consent from an identifiable performer or rights holder.
- Disclose where a platform or service requires it. Keep a note of the AI system, plan, generation date, and your contribution so you can answer distributor, client, or platform questions.
AI Music Tools And Their Stated Rights
The table separates a vendor’s stated usage license from copyright ownership. A commercial-use promise can let you publish a track even when U.S. copyright in wholly AI-generated material is uncertain.
| Tool | Stated commercial or usage terms | Copyright or rights caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Suno | Paid subscribers’ songs are theirs to use; the Pro plan includes commercial-use rights. Free Plan does not include commercial rights. | The stated terms concern use permission; U.S. copyright still depends on human authorship. |
| Eleven Music | Tracks are cleared for broad commercial use, but commercial rights vary by subscription tier. | Free use is personal and Marketplace access is browse-only; terms exclude film, TV, and studio games on some tiers. |
| Soundverse AI Beat Maker | Beats are described as royalty-ready, with a commercial license available for releasing and monetizing tracks. | Free Tier starts with 1,000 signup tokens; confirm the applicable paid license before release. |
| Loudly | Loudly describes its generated music as commercially licensed; Personal plans include commercial licensing. | Paid licensing rights depend on plan terms. Free generated tracks are limited to 30 seconds. |
| Mureka | Mureka says downloaded tracks have full commercial rights across platforms and projects. | If you use voice cloning or reference audio, obtain consent and verify the current terms for that material. |
| Musicful | Downloads carry a non-exclusive perpetual license; Musicful says generated music can be used commercially and offers a commercial licence certificate. | Musicful retains ownership of generated tracks, so the license is not an ownership transfer. |
| CreateSong AI | Commercial rights apply to generations made during an annual-plan term; monthly plans are personal and non-commercial. | Free outputs are streaming-only and public by default. Downloads and use follow the plan active when the track was generated. |
| OpenMusic AI | OpenMusic says its generated tracks are royalty-free, cleared for commercial use, and supplied with a license. | Plan terms govern downloads and commercial licensing; paid access starts at $10.49 per month. |
| Songin.ai | Paid-plan music is stated to be commercially usable for YouTube, Spotify, ads, and games. | Free downloads are watermarked MP3 files for personal use; multitrack stems require Premium. |
| Tunee | Paid subscribers receive a stated full commercial license. Free users can use music for personal projects with attribution. | Tunee also says copyright protection cannot be guaranteed while AI law evolves. |
| Sunp | Paid plans are the route for commercial publishing, certificates, and repeatable project use under the current license agreement. | Free use has public songs, streaming-only playback, and no downloads. |
| SimpleLofi | It advertises unlimited copyright-free music and says beats are safe for monetization on YouTube, Twitch, and other platforms. | Its stated plans are $16 per month for 100 beats and $89 per month for 1,000 beats; check current terms. |
| AI Game Music Generator | Tracks are described as royalty-free with a commercial license ready for release; Starter is $9.9 per month for 360 credits. | The service says songs are owned by aigamemusic, so commercial permission is distinct from ownership. |
| AI Makes Song | Free users can publish with attribution; paid plans unlock commercial rights for videos, podcasts, and games. | Confirm the paid plan’s current scope before client or advertising work. |
| ACE-Step API | The API describes its output as royalty-free and supports REST text-to-music generation. | Each generation costs 5–10 credits; copyright protection for wholly generated output remains a separate legal question. |
| 4i Music Video Maker | 4i says you keep full ownership and copyright of what you create and that it claims no ownership. | Projects are billed in credits per scene; songs cost 0.1 credits each. Review the service terms for any source material you upload. |
Choosing A Tool For A Release
When You Need A Commercial License
Choose a plan whose terms expressly cover your use. Suno, Mureka, Musicful, OpenMusic AI, Songin.ai, Tunee, Sunp, AI Makes Song, Soundverse AI Beat Maker, Loudly, Eleven Music, and AI Game Music Generator each publish some form of commercial-use statement, but their scope and tier conditions differ. Save the license page and generation record at the time you create the track.

When You Need Human-Controlled Authorship
Use stem, MIDI, or editing workflows where available, then make and document your own musical decisions. Soundverse AI Beat Maker offers separated stems and MIDI; Suno, Mureka, Musicful, Loudly, Eleven Music, and OpenMusic AI describe editing, stems, or related production controls. Those features can help you make human contributions, but they do not turn every AI-generated element into protected expression automatically.
When A Voice Or Likeness Is Involved
Voice cloning, vocal impersonation, and covers create consent and platform-policy issues beyond copyright ownership. Obtain the performer’s permission, check the tool’s terms, and label synthetic or altered content when a service or distributor requires it. A commercial license from a generator is not proof that you had permission to imitate a real artist.

Platform Rules Can Still Limit A Licensed Track
Spotify announced that vocal impersonation is allowed only when the impersonated artist authorizes it. Spotify also introduced spam filtering and support for DDEX AI disclosures in credits. Its 2025 announcement said it had removed more than 75 million spammy tracks in the previous 12 months, and its 2026 AI Persona badge identifies artist identities that may be AI-generated. Follow Spotify’s current delivery and metadata requirements even when your generator grants commercial use.
YouTube’s monetization policy targets mass-produced, repetitive, or template-based uploads under its inauthentic-content rule; AI use alone is not the stated trigger. YouTube also requires disclosure of realistic altered or synthetic content that could be mistaken for a real person’s performance. Keep your release records and use the platform’s disclosure controls where applicable.

A Practical Release Checklist
- Identify every human-authored element you can substantiate.
- Record the generator, account tier, generation date, prompt, uploaded material, edits, and exported files.
- Save the vendor license or terms page that applied when you generated and downloaded the track.
- Confirm that samples, lyrics, references, and voices were used with permission.
- Check distributor requirements for AI disclosures, impersonation, metadata, and repetitive uploads.
- Describe only the human contribution if you register the work in the United States, and disclose more than a minimal amount of AI-generated material.
What You Can Reliably Claim
You can usually make a clear distinction between permission to use a track under a vendor’s plan and copyright ownership in the generated expression. The first is set by the platform’s terms. The second depends on human authorship and the law that applies where you seek protection. Treat both questions separately, keep your evidence, and recheck the terms before a major release.
