You can use conversational AI to generate an original track, but “copyright-free” is not a blanket status a music generator can promise. In the United States, the Copyright Office says music generated entirely by AI is not copyrightable, prompts alone do not make you its author, and only human-authored parts of a mixed work may be protected. For a usable track, make your own meaningful musical contribution, check the chosen service’s current license for your intended use, and avoid unlicensed voices, lyrics, samples, or reference recordings.

What “Copyright-Free” Can Mean

The phrase can mean that you can use a track without paying a separate royalty, that the provider grants commercial-use permission, or that no one owns copyright in fully AI-generated material. Those are different things. Product terms may grant permission subject to conditions; that does not establish that the generated music is copyrightable or exclusive.

The U.S. Copyright Office says applicants registering a work with more than a minimal amount of AI-generated material must disclose it and describe the human author’s contribution. This is U.S. information, not legal advice for every country or use.

Choose a Conversational Music Tool

For a back-and-forth song workflow, Suno, Eleven Music, and Udio describe full-song generation from prompts, with different editing and use limits. Suno has web and mobile apps; Eleven Music is provided through web and API; Udio is prompt-led and offers timeline editing. Availability, licensing, and current download rules can change, so check the vendor’s terms and product page before relying on a particular feature.

Prepare a Prompt You Can Actually Revise

Start with a short brief that describes what the music should do, then refine one musical decision at a time. The examples below are prompt-writing patterns, not claims that a tool supports a particular genre, instrument, duration, or control. Where a specific style or control is not established for the service, check its current interface and documentation.

  • Purpose: “Create an original instrumental cue for a calm technology explainer.”
  • Energy and shape: “Begin sparse, build gently in the middle, and end with a clean resolution.”
  • Sound: “Use warm sustained tones, a restrained pulse, and a clear melody; leave space for narration.”
  • Boundaries: “No vocals, no recognizable melodies, and no imitation of a named artist or existing song.”

Do not upload a commercial recording or ask for a recognizable singer’s voice unless you have the necessary permission and the service’s terms allow that use. The listings mention audio references or voice tools for some services, but they do not establish rights to any particular source recording or voice.

Generate and Refine the Track

  1. Choose the intended use first. Decide whether this is personal listening, a monetized video, a client project, or another use. Read the selected plan’s current licensing terms before creating work you expect to publish.
  2. Write a descriptive first prompt. Name the intended scene, instrumental or vocal choice, broad mood, energy, and how the music should start and finish. Describe musical qualities rather than naming an artist or asking for a copy of an existing track.
  3. Generate a few candidates. Use the service’s available generation controls. Credit use and generation limits differ by plan; consult the vendor’s current page for details beyond the limits listed above.
  4. Give one revision instruction at a time. For example: “Keep the melody, reduce the percussion, and make the ending resolve more clearly.” Use section editing or extensions only if available in your chosen tool and plan.
  5. Add a human-authored contribution. Rewrite lyrics yourself, perform or arrange a part, or make meaningful edits to the composition. Keep records of what you wrote and changed. The Copyright Office says prompts alone do not make a person the author; it treats human-authored contributions to mixed works separately.
  6. Review the output before use. Listen for unwanted vocal fragments, abrupt edits, accidental resemblance to material you know, or other issues that matter for your project. This check cannot establish legal clearance.
  7. Save the terms and project details. Keep the prompt history, source material permissions, output files, plan name, and a copy of the applicable license terms. Confirm export and download availability in the product before building a workflow around them.

Check Rights Before Publishing

Permission to use output commercially is a question of the service’s plan terms; copyrightability is a separate question. Suno’s listing excludes commercial rights on its Free Plan. Eleven Music’s listing says commercial rights vary by plan and excludes film, TV, and studio games. Udio’s supplied details do not establish a commercial-use grant, and downloads are disabled during its stated transition period. Check each vendor’s current terms for your project, territory, distribution method, and plan.

Get consent and confirm platform terms before using a real person’s voice, a cover, uploaded sample, or reference audio. The available product descriptions do not establish permission for any particular voice, composition, or recording. Do not assume a generated track is exclusive, cleared for every platform, or free of third-party rights concerns.

What You Can Claim About AI-Assisted Music

Under the U.S. Copyright Office’s stated approach, a track generated entirely by AI is not copyrightable, and prompting alone does not establish human authorship. Human-written lyrics, melody, arrangement, or other expressive contributions may be treated differently when they are sufficiently human-authored. If you register a work containing more than a minimal amount of AI-generated material, disclose it and describe your contribution as the Office requires.

For an everyday publishing decision, keep the claims modest: use the track only within the provider’s applicable terms, identify your own creative contribution accurately, and do not describe fully generated music as copyrighted by you on the basis of prompts alone.
