Write four decisions first: tempo, feel, section length and the role of the beat. For example: “92 BPM, swung head-nod feel, four-bar loop, sparse drums with space for a vocal.” Keep the brief about rhythm and arrangement. Arrange The Beat Without Losing The Groove
- Keep the strongest two- or four-bar idea as the main loop.
- Make an intro by muting one or more parts for a few bars.
- Add a fuller section by restoring bass and percussion together.
- Create a break by removing the kick or bass, then return to the main pattern.
- Use small note, velocity or timing changes so repeated sections do not sound identical.
