To remaster an old song with AI, start with the cleanest existing recording, make a working copy, and use an AI mastering tool to shape that stereo mix. Compare several gain-matched versions, listen for damage the mastering stage cannot repair, and keep the original. The tools below document mastering and reference controls; they do not establish specific support for vintage recordings, noise removal, clicks, tape hiss, or any particular era or genre. Check each vendor’s site for the file formats and restoration features you need.
What AI Remastering Can And Cannot Do
Mastering works on the mix you provide. It can adjust qualities such as tone, dynamics, stereo image, or loudness when a tool offers those controls. It cannot be assumed to remove hiss, crackle, distortion, or other flaws in an old source: none of the listed tool details establishes those restoration capabilities. If the recording is damaged, find a tool that explicitly documents the repair you need before uploading it.

- Locate the highest-quality existing transfer or mix. Avoid using a copy that has already been heavily compressed or processed if a cleaner version is available.
- Keep an untouched copy, then make a separate working copy. Do not overwrite or discard the source.
- Listen through the whole track before uploading. Note any sections with obvious noise, distortion, harshness, or changes in level, so you can check those passages in every preview.
- Choose a reference track for its tonal balance and musical feel, not simply because it is newer. Use a recording with a similar arrangement and density where possible.
- Check the chosen service’s site for accepted formats, upload limits, retention practices, and whether it supports your source. These specifics are not established for every tool below.

Remaster The Track Step By Step
- Upload the working copy. Use the stereo mix for a normal remaster. If you have separate stems and want to adjust elements individually, Ozone Advanced documents Stem EQ, while the other workflows in the table focus on complete stereo tracks or do not establish stem support. Confirm that the tool accepts your files before preparing a stem session.
- Start with a restrained pass. In Ozone, work through the available mastering modules and listen after each meaningful change. In Waves Online Mastering, choose a style and use its Presence and Depth controls gradually. In Mixea, generate the available options and compare them. In RoEx, select a genre profile and loudness target that suit the recording, then use reference matching if helpful. These controls are documented; a dedicated “oldies” preset or restoration setting is not.
- Compare the same passages. Replay the quiet opening, the densest section, and any passage you flagged during source listening. With Waves, use the 30-second previews; with Mixea, compare its 15 options. For other tools, use their available comparison workflow and check the vendor’s instructions if the control is unclear.
- Judge tone and dynamics before loudness. Ask whether the vocal and instruments remain clear, whether cymbals or upper tones have become tiring, and whether the loudest section still has the movement you want. If a version sounds more impressive only because it is louder, reduce playback level before comparing. Do not assume a service has a particular loudness target unless it documents one.
- Check stereo changes. Listen in stereo and then through one speaker or mono playback if available. Keep a version only if important musical elements remain clear. The listed tools do not all document stereo controls, so do not assume every workflow can correct a narrow or unstable image.
- Export and archive carefully. Choose an available high-quality download option, then listen to the exported file from beginning to end. Keep the original and the final export in separate files, with clear names so you can identify the source and remaster later.
Use A Reference Without Erasing The Original Character
A reference helps make a comparison, but it does not tell the service what decade a song comes from or guarantee an era-appropriate result. Try a reference with a similar arrangement and vocal placement. If matching makes the old recording sound unnaturally bright, dense, or wide, back off or compare a version without the match. Waves and RoEx document reference matching; the listed Mixea details do not.
