Spec score 7.7 #14 of 31 in 3D File Converter Software

What it is

FBX2glTF is a command-line tool for converting Autodesk FBX 3D assets into glTF 2.0. It can write a separate glTF representation or a single binary .glb file, and can embed buffers as data URIs. Precompiled binaries are available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux; an npm package also provides a Promise-based Node API with binaries for Darwin, Linux and Windows_NT. The converter bakes FBX animations into the output and supports blend shapes, although complex rigs can produce large files. For materials, metallic-roughness PBR conversion supports Stingray PBS, and emissive values and textures, occlusion maps and normal maps transfer automatically. Optional Draco compression reduces mesh size, but requires a viewer that supports KHR_draco_geometry_compression. The project is free under a 3-clause BSD license. Building requires FBX SDK 2019.2; the initial v0.9.0 release was identified as beta because the tool had not encountered a wide variety of FBX assets.

Strong points and limits

Strong points

  • Precompiled binaries cover Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.
  • Outputs glTF, .glb, or embedded data URIs.
  • Bakes animations and supports blend shapes.
  • Transfers emissive, occlusion and normal maps.
  • Free under a 3-clause BSD license.

Limits

  • Baked animation can create very large files.
  • Build system supports FBX SDK 2019.2 only.
  • Draco compression requires a compatible viewer.
  • Initial v0.9.0 release was identified as beta.

Who it suits

It suits 3D artists and developers who need a command-line path from FBX assets to glTF 2.0, including Node users. Check the animation file-size tradeoff and SDK requirement before choosing it.

Verdict

FBX2glTF specifies useful output, animation and material options for a free converter. Its baked-animation size risk and narrow build SDK support are important constraints.
