What it is
R-Linux is a free file-recovery utility for Ext2, Ext3, and Ext4 file systems, with host versions for Linux and Windows. It can recover files after virus attacks, power failures, partition reformatting or deletion, and from disks with bad sectors. Recovery sources include hard disks, CDs, DVDs, floppy disks, Compact Flash cards, USB drives, ZIP drives, Memory Sticks, and other removable media. Memory-card recovery and file preview are supported, but RAID recovery is not. IntelligentScan can search devices with unknown file systems for known file types. R-Linux can create compressed, split, and password-protected disk or partition images, scanning while images are created; compressed images work with R-Drive Image. Bad-sector disks can be copied to an image for processing. Recovered files can be saved to any host-accessible disk, including network disks. Help documentation lists Linux mdadm and LVM/LVM2 volumes. The Linux version requires a kernel 2.6-or-newer RPM or DEB distribution, X.Org X server 1.7.6 or newer, and root privileges.
