In their own words
AccuRIG
AccuRIG is a guided, standalone auto-rigging tool for turning 3D meshes into animated cartoon characters and digital human avatars. It handles varied scan poses and models with different sizes, styles and postures, including realistic anatomy, exaggerated proportions, atypical limbs, obstructed shoulders and fantasy creatures with hind legs. Skin weighting supports articulation around hair, knees, elbows, hands, accessories and clothing. The tool can separate close-set fingers and rig varied finger types. Joint masking removes unwanted joints for partial rigs on incomplete limbs or non-standard poses. Finished characters can be saved in FBX and USD formats, with export destinations including Unreal Engine, Unity, Blender, iClone, Omniverse, Maya, 3ds Max, MotionBuilder and Cinema 4D. AccuRIG runs on Windows 11, 10 or 8 with 64-bit support. The free ActorCore plan costs nothing and supports one mesh in an A/T pose. Multi-mesh characters may be imported but cannot be rigged separately in that version. Advanced features are available in Character Creator 4.1.
Houdini
Houdini is SideFX’s procedural 3D creation system for film, television, games, motion graphics, virtual reality and synthetic-data work. Its workflow stores actions in nodes connected as networks, and supports sharing workflows and custom digital assets with colleagues. Tools cover modeling, sculpting, animation, parametric modeling, character rigging, rendering and 3D-print export. Houdini FX adds simulation tools for fluids, destruction, pyro effects, grains and cloth. KineFX supports character rigging and animation, alongside tools for hair, fur, feathers, muscles and cloth. Karma renders images in the Solaris look-development workflow, while PDG distributes tasks, handles dependencies and creates datasets for machine-learning and AI applications. Houdini runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. The free Apprentice version is for non-commercial learning and personal projects; its renders are capped at 1920x1080 and carry a watermark. SideFX lists perpetual licenses, annual upgrades, rentals, subscriptions and education licenses. Listed paid pricing starts at $299/yr, though individual options have different terms and prices.
