Overview

Editsub is a browser-based workspace for editing subtitles, generating captions and translating cues. It best suits individuals or small teams handling mixed subtitle tasks; the free transcription option is useful for short clips, while longer work depends on credits.

It combines support for six subtitle formats with timing tools and AI assistance. The 3072 MB media limit accommodates substantial source files, but subtitle uploads are capped at 10 MB, a meaningful constraint for larger projects.

Key features

Editing and timing

Editsub handles SRT, VTT, SBV, SUB, ASS and SSA files, and exports SRT or VTT. Frame-accurate adjustment, batch shifting, waveform synchronization and real-time preview give editors options for both cue-level corrections and track-wide timing changes. The narrower export choices matter if a delivery workflow requires another output format.

Captioning and translation

Automatic captioning and AI translation into more than 100 languages broaden the tool beyond manual subtitle cleanup. Local audio or video up to 10 minutes can be transcribed free without an account; longer transcription and translation use credits. Supported source media range from common audio formats to video formats including MP4, MOV, AVI and MKV, up to 3072 MB.

AI co-pilot and collaboration

The co-pilot flags reading-speed, timing, overlap, gap, line-length and transcription issues, and can fix or rewrite cues. That can speed routine review, but automated edits still call for editorial oversight. Shared project links allow simultaneous work by multiple users, a practical option for teams coordinating a project.

Privacy and rights

Subtitle files processed in a browser session without an account are not stored on Editsub's servers. Account files are stored securely and accessible only to the user. Editsub says transmissions are encrypted and that it does not share personal information or subtitle content with third parties. Users retain rights to subtitles they create, including commercial-use rights.

Pricing

Editsub has a free tier and paid options, but its subscriptions and credit packs serve different workloads. The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and allows 10 subtitle files. It is a sensible starting point for light editing, though the file allowance and credit requirement for longer transcription or translation limit sustained use.

Pro costs 4.00 USD per year, billed $48 per year, and includes 1,500 credits per month, approximately 13 hours of transcription. That recurring allowance fits regular captioning better than the free tier; users should still account for the 10 MB subtitle-upload cap. The separate plan summary describes the starting price as $4/user/mo (annual).

For occasional work beyond a subscription, Starter credit pack costs 5.00 USD per month as a one-time pack and supplies 1,000 credits; Standard credit pack costs 20.00 USD per month as a one-time pack and supplies 5,000 credits. The separately described Starter pack costs 5.00 USD per once for 1,000 credits, and Standard pack costs 20.00 USD per once for 5,000 credits; those credits never expire. The one-time packs suit irregular projects where credits need not be used monthly, while the monthly credit packs are also one-off purchases but do not carry the stated never-expire term. Choose based on whether predictable monthly capacity or longer-lived credit balance matters more.

Platforms

Editsub is web-based, with platform coverage for Linux, macOS and Windows as well as the web. The browser workflow avoids a desktop-platform restriction, though no mobile platform is included among its supported platforms.

Who it's for

Editsub is a good fit for subtitle editors who want transcription, translation and timing tools together, or collaborators who need simultaneous project access. It is less compelling for high-volume subtitle-file workflows constrained by a 10 MB upload limit, or for users who require exports beyond SRT and VTT.

Pros and cons

Broad subtitle and media format support: six editable subtitle formats and numerous audio/video inputs make it suitable for varied source material.
Useful timing and review toolkit: frame-accurate controls, waveform synchronization and issue-flagging address both technical timing and cue quality.
Short transcription without signup: local files up to 10 minutes can be transcribed free, lowering the barrier for occasional use.
Subtitle uploads are capped at 10 MB: this may rule out larger subtitle files even though source media can be much larger.
Credit-based usage for extended AI work: longer transcription and translation require paid credits, so recurring or translation-heavy work needs budget planning.
Only SRT and VTT export: editors delivering in other formats may need another step in their workflow.

Alternatives

Jubler is worth considering for a free desktop subtitle editor across Linux, macOS and Windows; its video preview and audio waveform require VLC, and the project relies on donations.

SRTGen may suit a localization workflow that needs API or web access and SRT, VTT or TXT export; its free tier has a five-minute screen-recording limit, 2 GB storage and a signup credit cap.

Subtitle Edit is a free, open-source desktop alternative for Windows, macOS and Linux.

EZTitles is a paid Windows option with a seven-day trial, suited to readers who prefer its Single Project Wizard or Essentials offering.

Checksub is a paid web, API and extension alternative with a free plan and trial; its Junior plan starts at 18.00 USD per month and includes two hours of monthly credits.

Zubtitle is an option for web or mobile video workflows, with a free plan limited to two videos per month, a watermark and resolutions up to 720p.

Subtitle Composer is a free Linux desktop choice for readers seeking a KDE community-developed option.

Amara is an alternative for readers prioritizing an open-source subtitle platform, with its work available under the AGPL license.

Verdict

Choose Editsub if you want one web workspace for subtitle editing, timing, short free transcription and AI-assisted translation, especially when collaborators need to share a project. Look elsewhere if the 10 MB subtitle-file ceiling, credit costs for longer AI work or SRT/VTT-only export conflicts with your workload.
