Overview

The service runs the relevant gov.uk right-to-work or right-to-rent check and returns the answer as JSON. Responses can include the outcome, dates, conditions, applicant photo and gov.uk PDF, with an audit trail for records. The home page offers two live checks a day without signup, a useful way to try a check before choosing a plan.

Right-to-work checks are intended for UK employers, recruitment agencies and hiring platforms. Right-to-rent checks are for landlords and letting agents in England and apply to every adult tenant. The service is not affiliated with HM Government, the Home Office or gov.uk.

Key features

API and callbacks

API access suits teams that want verification inside a hiring or rental process rather than relying solely on a separate web workflow. Asynchronous checks can post signed results to a callback URL, including on the sandbox plan. Documentation includes cURL, Node.js and Python examples; Node.js integration needs no SDK. Rate limits differ by plan, so the Free tier's five requests a second may constrain busier integrations.

Data handling and support

Live check inputs and gov.uk pages are retained for up to seven days to investigate failed or disputed checks, then deleted automatically. This short window limits retained applicant data, but teams needing longer access should account for their own record-keeping needs. The maker says customer and applicant data is processed in the UK and EEA, with no transfers outside those regions during a check. API keys are stored as SHA-256 hashes, traffic uses TLS, and card data is handled by Stripe rather than stored on the service's servers. A published data processing agreement and countersignable PDF can help procurement review; general, security and other support enquiries go to support@checksharecode.co.uk.

Pricing

The freemium structure makes small-scale use inexpensive to start, while monthly caps and paid overages distinguish the plans.

Free: Free, with 10 live checks a month, a hard stop at 10, no card requirement, a sandbox key and five requests a second. It fits evaluation or very low volumes, but cannot carry live checks beyond the cap.
Pro: £14.00 per month, billed £14/month, for 100 live checks a month, then £0.25 a check, and 20 requests a second. Email support from Matthew is included. This is the practical entry plan for a modest live workflow, though extra checks cost more per check than on Scale.
Scale: £49.00 per month, billed £49/month, for 500 live checks a month, then £0.10 a check, and 50 requests a second. It suits higher-volume use where the lower overage rate and larger quota justify the higher monthly fee.
Enterprise: custom pricing, invoiced monthly, with volume-based rates, an SLA, a named contact, signed DPA and higher rate limits. It is the fit for larger or more demanding deployments, but requires a custom commercial arrangement.

No plan term beyond monthly billing is given for paid tiers, so compare the monthly fee and likely overages against expected check volume. The Free plan is deliberately capped rather than an unlimited free route.

Platforms

The service runs on web and API. Those options cover staff-led checks and integrations, but no mobile app platform is offered.

Who it's for

Choose it when a UK employer, recruiter, landlord or letting agent needs share-code checks returned in a structured form, especially when signed callbacks can reduce manual handling. It is less suitable for teams that need more than 10 monthly checks without paying, require retention beyond seven days, or are checking outside the stated UK right-to-work and England right-to-rent use cases.

Pros and cons

Pro: Signed callbacks are included even on sandbox, making it possible to build and assess asynchronous workflows before paying.
Pro: Pro and Scale provide clear monthly quotas and per-check overage rates, making expected usage easier to compare.
Pro: UK/EEA processing, a published DPA and a countersignable version support privacy and procurement review.
Con: Free use stops at 10 live checks a month, and Pro overages at £0.25 per check can add up for growing volumes.
Con: Applicant inputs and gov.uk pages are retained for only up to seven days, which may not meet every team's investigation or record-keeping needs.

Alternatives

Right to Work Verification Software is a useful starting point for comparing the category. Choose Credas Right to Work instead if you want Android or iOS support, a free trial, and a Gateway plan with one flat fee per search; it limits the plan to five users and one branch or brand. Yoti Right to Work is another paid option with Android, iOS, API and web platforms, with pricing handled through sales.

Experian Data Quality Solutions may suit buyers seeking a tailored solution and consultation, with a free trial and API and web platforms. For a free web-based option, consider the GOV.UK Right to Work Checking Service. Rightcheck is a paid alternative with Android, iOS and web access and quote-based pricing.

E-Verify is free for U.S. employers verifying newly hired employees, so it serves a different national workflow. WorkRight offers Android, iOS, web and API access, with a Lite plan including 50 monthly verifications and I-9 and E-Verify workflows. CheckWorkRights is a paid, employer-only alternative with commercial-agreement pricing.

Verdict

Right To Work Checker is a strong fit for UK teams that want share-code results in an API-driven process, particularly those who value signed callbacks and can work within monthly quotas. Its principal advantage is a low-cost route from sandbox to live use; look elsewhere if your volumes are high enough to make overages unattractive or your workflow needs a longer data-retention window.
