Overview

AudioPen turns spoken thoughts into rewritten text, with controls for how closely the result follows the original and how long it runs. It suits people who think aloud or find typing slow, but it is not a meeting recorder. The free tier’s three-minute recording cap makes it a sampler; longer individual notes and unrestricted rewriting require Prime.

Key features

AudioPen combines transcription with adjustable rewriting, so a dictated first draft can become clearer prose rather than a verbatim transcript alone. Low, medium, and high rewrite settings and an output-length control let users choose between preserving their phrasing and asking for a more substantial edit. Users can also describe a preferred style or provide a writing sample for it to follow.

The written result can be in a different language from the spoken input, and AudioPen supports many languages. That makes it useful for multilingual note-making, though the product is still centered on turning one person’s speech into writing.

Voice typing puts dictation into text fields in apps including Gmail, Slack, Notion, and Google Docs. For routing saved notes elsewhere, AudioPen supports Zapier and webhooks. Prime’s MCP gives ChatGPT or Claude read-only access to notes, which is useful for consulting saved material without granting write access.

AudioPen says voice-note audio is deleted from its servers within 48 hours, voice-typing audio is not saved, data is encrypted at rest, and notes are not used to train AI. Its iPhone, Android, Mac, and Windows apps can transcribe on-device offline; rewriting still needs an internet connection. AudioPen also supports audio import and transcript search. Prime users can upload up to 100 audio files every four weeks, each up to 100MB, in common listed formats.

This is an individual-thought tool, not a solution for meeting records: it does not join Zoom calls or label speakers. That distinction rules it out for readers who need attributed multi-speaker transcripts.

Pricing

AudioPen is freemium. Free is free and includes transcription and rewriting for recordings up to 3 minutes, plus limited voice-typing sessions. It is enough to try the core workflow, but short recordings and limited typing sessions constrain regular use.

Prime plans include unlimited recordings up to 15 minutes, unlimited voice typing and AI rewrites, unlimited note storage, audio and text uploads, SuperSummaries, and AudioPen MCP. They are sold as one-time payments for fixed terms:

Prime (3 months): 33.00 USD per once, billed 3 months.
Prime (1 year): 99.00 USD per once, billed 1 year.
Prime (2 years): 159.00 USD per once, billed 2 years.

The shorter term costs less upfront; the longer terms extend access without a recurring monthly subscription. All three share the same 15-minute recording ceiling, so Prime is not a fit for capturing longer sessions as a single recording. For groups, up to 100 one-year Prime licenses can be purchased in one order at a 20% discount.

Platforms

AudioPen runs on Android, iOS, macOS, web, Windows, and as an extension. Its mobile and desktop apps support offline transcription, but offline recording is not available and AI rewriting requires internet access. That makes offline work useful for transcription, not a fully offline rewrite workflow.

Who it's for

Writers and creators can use AudioPen to turn rough spoken ideas into more polished text; salespeople, lawyers, and therapists are among the other audiences it names. It is also a practical option for people who find typing slow or painful. Choose it when personal voice capture and shaping the resulting prose matter more than meeting coverage. Look elsewhere if you need Zoom participation, speaker labels, or recordings longer than 15 minutes.

Pros and cons

Pros: Adjustable rewriting, length controls, and custom styles give users meaningful control over how raw speech becomes prose.
Pros: Voice typing, integrations, and read-only MCP access connect note capture with writing and other apps.
Pros: On-device offline transcription is available in the mobile and desktop apps, and AudioPen describes specific audio-retention and data-use protections.
Cons: Free recordings stop at 3 minutes, while Prime recordings stop at 15 minutes; neither tier suits long-form capture in one take.
Cons: Meeting users must look elsewhere because AudioPen neither joins Zoom calls nor labels speakers.
Cons: Offline transcription does not extend to AI rewriting, which requires an internet connection.

Alternatives

Letterly is another freemium voice-note option across Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows, with a PRO subscription listed at 19.99 USD per month billed monthly. Snow is worth considering for readers who want voice captures paired with AI summaries, tags, connections, and search; its Pro plan is 8.00 USD per month. VoiceJournal offers a free tier with 10 notes total and a 2-minute recording cap, so it is a more constrained starting point for basic AI transcription.

Voicenotes may suit users who prioritize a free allowance of 100 weekly transcription minutes, unlimited recordings, and 30-day history. Audionotes is an alternative with a free tier for unlimited one-minute voice notes and unlimited text notes. Humoze offers a web-based free plan with 5 hours of AI transcription a month, making it a different option for users who value a monthly transcription quota.

Memex is a free Android and iOS app; its AI features require a configured model service, which may incur provider charges. Memoth is another alternative for readers comparing voice-note tools.

Verdict

AudioPen is best for individuals who want to speak ideas, shape them into clearer writing, and dictate directly into other apps. Its adjustable rewrites, custom styles, and offline transcription make that focused workflow compelling. Choose something else for meetings, long recordings, or a workflow that must rewrite text offline.
