Overview

Aurora-Med is scheduling software for medical residency programs and teaching hospitals coordinating rotations, call, and clinic hours. It suits organizations where a change to one assignment can affect several others. Its focus is joined-up scheduling and scenario revision; programs seeking a self-serve product with a published price should look elsewhere.

Key features

Rotation assignments account for specialty track and residency year, and can be updated as program requirements evolve. That makes Aurora relevant to programs with changing annual structures, especially when rotation changes must stay compatible with call and clinic commitments.

Call scheduling distributes shifts to balance coverage and reduce excessive calls for individual residents. Clinic schedules take rotation and call constraints into account to avoid clinic-hour conflicts. Coverage rules and conflict checks address practical staffing needs, while the system also accounts for regulatory requirements such as changing accreditation standards and internal policies.

Schedulers can simulate scenarios and adjust schedules for rule changes, special requests, staffing shortages, or patient-volume surges. That ability is valuable when a program must respond to disruption without treating each schedule in isolation. Aurora’s approach combines artificial intelligence with expert human schedulers’ judgment and experience; it is designed for complex constraints rather than a simple calendar.

An Excel-style view supports filtering, analyzing, extracting, and entering model and schedule data. Configurable database import and export support Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server, and an API can connect Aurora to client-controlled systems or load and update models and data. These connections make it a stronger candidate for organizations integrating scheduling with existing systems, though the described API and database options are aimed at configurable institutional workflows.

The maker cites Massachusetts General Hospital as using Aurora to schedule residency programs across clinical departments and interdisciplinary fields. It also describes ongoing customization and feature updates as user needs change, which may suit programs with evolving requirements.

Pricing

Aurora-Med uses custom pricing. Prospective customers can request a free demo through the contact form. For a residency program or teaching hospital evaluating complex, connected schedules, a demo is a practical way to assess fit; organizations that need to compare fixed costs before engaging a vendor may prefer a product with a published price.

Platforms

Aurora runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows PCs, with web access. It can be hosted on customer servers or run via the cloud, giving organizations a choice between self-hosting and cloud deployment. Mobile access is through the web.

Who it's for

Aurora-Med is best suited to residency programs and teaching hospitals coordinating clinical rotations, on-call duties, and clinic hours under staffing and regulatory constraints. Its scenario tools and configurable connections are especially relevant when program requirements change or scheduling data must connect to client-controlled systems. A team needing only a single schedule type, or one that prioritizes self-service pricing, is less likely to benefit from its institutional focus.

Pros and cons

Pros: Rotation, call, and clinic schedules account for one another, which helps programs manage interdependent assignments.
Pros: Scenario simulation and schedule adjustment address changes such as staffing shortages and revised requirements.
Pros: Database import/export, an API, and self-hosted or cloud deployment offer options for institutional integration and operation.
Cons: Custom pricing means programs cannot assess its cost from a published rate.
Cons: Its emphasis on complex residency constraints is a poor match for buyers seeking a straightforward, single-purpose scheduler.

Alternatives

TigerConnect Physician Scheduling is another paid option, with Android and iOS alongside desktop and web platforms; its enterprise-wide pricing also requires contacting sales for a demo or price.

Lightning Bolt may suit organizations comparing another paid clinical scheduling option across mobile, desktop, and web. Its per-seat licenses mean a net increase in scheduled individuals requires additional licenses.

Amion offers a Pro plan for up to 10 schedules with self-serve setup, mobile and desktop access, and custom rules; its Enterprise plan has unlimited schedules and organization-wide settings. Consider it when those plan distinctions match the program's scale.

CoverED is a paid, mobile-and-web alternative with a free trial and a bundled residency program license priced at 30.00 USD per month, billed $25/mo annual. It may fit programs looking for a bundled license with resident roles, custom rotation blocks, and per-block site assignment.

MedHub is another paid option, with Android, iOS, web, and API platforms.

New Innovations is another paid option, with Android, iOS, and web platforms.

Resident Vacation Scheduler may suit a small program focused on vacation scheduling: its free plan covers up to five residents, while its Starter plan is a one-time purchase covering one GME academic year.

MedRez.net offers a paid option for one program or specialty at 450.00 USD per year, with a half-year option also available. Its Android, iOS, and web platforms and free trial may make it worth comparing for a program seeking a defined annual term.

Verdict

Aurora-Med is a strong fit for residency programs and teaching hospitals that need rotations, call, and clinic schedules to work together under changing staffing and compliance constraints. Its scenario support and institutional integration options are the main reasons to choose it. Look elsewhere if published pricing or a self-serve, narrowly focused scheduler is essential.
