Overview

Founded in 2020 and headquartered in Amsterdam, OpenUp serves employees, managers, family members and organisations from start-ups to large enterprises. Its support spans psychological care, lifestyle and financial coaching, group sessions and self-guided learning. More than 200 certified experts include psychologists, lifestyle experts, financial coaches, nutritionists and medical doctors, giving the service breadth beyond therapy alone.

Employees at partner organisations can book unlimited sessions without approval, with appointments available within 48 hours. Coaching is offered in 45 languages. Managers and HR do not see who uses OpenUp or what users discuss; employers instead receive anonymised, aggregated insights. That distinction makes the benefit more credible for employees wary of workplace scrutiny while still providing organisations with a broad view of usage.

Key features

Expert sessions: Live therapy and coaching give employees direct access to human support, with no session cap under an employer partnership. The short appointment window and lack of approval remove practical barriers, although the benefit depends on an employer relationship.
Self-guided support: Learning resources and mindfulness content offer an option between sessions or for people who prefer to work independently. The Vitality Check takes about 10 minutes and returns personalised recommendations; its organisational insights are anonymised.
AI well-being coach: The coach helps users reflect and identify next steps, but it does not diagnose or offer clinical advice. A 24/7 human escalation pathway for acute distress signals is an important safeguard, though the tool is not a substitute for clinical care.
Session notes: AI-assisted notes require consent and expert review, and OpenUp does not store audio or video recordings. Those limits offer more control over documentation than an always-on recording approach.
Privacy and security: OpenUp says health data is handled within the European Economic Area and held in the EU, and that its information security system is ISO 27001 and NEN 7510 certified. A support line staffed by qualified mental health first aid responders is available day and night.
Access: Employees can use Microsoft single sign-on for MyOpenUp. Mobile apps are available on iOS and Android, alongside web access.

Pricing

OpenUp is paid for organisations, with custom pricing billed per employee per year. The Employer partnership includes unlimited 1:1 sessions for employees, which suits employers seeking an ongoing benefit rather than a capped allowance. The absence of a published rate makes it harder to compare costs before requesting a tailored quote.

For people whose employer does not offer OpenUp, the first session is free, followed by a Three-session card at 249.00 EUR per once. It covers three online sessions of 25 minutes each. That is a defined way to try expert support without an employer plan, but the individual option is limited to three short sessions rather than the unlimited access available through a partnership.

Platforms

OpenUp is available on Android, iOS and the web. Mobile apps support access away from a desktop, while Microsoft single sign-on offers a direct route into MyOpenUp for employees with a Microsoft account.

Who it's for

OpenUp is a strong fit for employers that want a confidential, broad well-being benefit spanning therapy, coaching and self-guided resources. Employees benefit most when their organisation has a partnership, particularly those who value choice of expert, multilingual coaching or sessions without manager approval. The individual offer is better treated as a short introduction than a full alternative to employer coverage. Organisations wanting a published per-person price before engaging with a vendor may prefer to compare other options first.

Pros and cons

Pros: Unlimited sessions without approval under employer partnerships, with appointments available within 48 hours.
Pros: Managers and HR cannot see individual participation or conversation content; employers receive only anonymised, aggregated insights.
Pros: A network of more than 200 certified experts and coaching in 45 languages cover a wide range of needs.
Pros: EU data handling, stated ISO 27001 and NEN 7510 certification, and consent-based, expert-reviewed AI notes provide meaningful privacy safeguards.
Cons: Employer pricing is custom, so organisations cannot assess the cost from a published rate.
Cons: People without employer access receive one free session and then a three-session card, a much narrower offer than the employer benefit.
Cons: The AI coach does not provide clinical advice, so users needing treatment must turn to a professional.

Verdict

Choose OpenUp if you are an employer seeking confidential, flexible well-being support that combines human experts with self-guided resources, or an employee whose organisation already provides it. Unlimited sessions without approval and privacy from employer visibility are compelling reasons to choose it. Look elsewhere if you need a published employer rate or sustained individual access without workplace coverage.
