Overview

SoFi is a broad financial platform for people who want banking, investing and personal-finance tracking under one roof. Its strongest fit is a U.S. member willing to use SoFi accounts as well as its budgeting and tracking tools; the trade-off is that access and benefits vary by product and some enhanced savings benefits require a monthly subscription.

Founded in 2011, SoFi reports 15.8 million members and has been publicly traded since 2021. Its scope extends from loans and banking to investing, credit cards, insurance, crypto and financial guidance, so it is better understood as a financial-services platform than a dedicated budgeting app. See Personal Finance Software for more options.

Key features

Budgeting and tracking

SoFi Relay combines a budget planner with spending and cash-flow tracking, net-worth tracking and credit-score monitoring. It can connect external accounts from more than 12,000 financial institutions, sync accounts in both directions and export reports. That breadth makes Relay useful for members who want a consolidated view rather than a budget-only tool. Relay is U.S.-only.

Banking and investing

SoFi banking supports balance and transaction monitoring, real-time alerts, bill pay, transfers, mobile check deposit, debit-card controls and automated savings. Members can use more than 55,000 Allpoint ATMs without a fee for in-network use. SoFi Bank deposits are insured up to $250,000 per depositor per legal ownership category, with potential coverage up to $3 million through its Insured Deposit Program.

SoFi Invest offers self-directed and robo investing, IRAs, stock trading, IPO investing, fractional shares and ETFs. Invest is available in the United States and Hong Kong, while several other SoFi services are limited to the United States. The broad menu is useful for consolidating financial activity, but readers seeking investment recommendations for specific stocks or automated trade execution should look elsewhere: SoFi Coach does neither.

SoFi Coach

Coach provides chat-based financial insights around the clock and is free to members using SoFi banking, borrowing or investing. Through the SoFi app, members can ask about credit scores, budgets and retirement or investment goals, and can transfer money or open checking and savings accounts through chat. It uses bank-grade security, privacy features and multifactor authentication; user information is not used to train AI partners' large-language models. It is guidance and account action, not stock-picking or trade execution.

Pricing

SoFi is freemium. SoFi Checking and Savings is free, with no account, service or maintenance fees and no minimum balance requirement. That is a straightforward entry point for members who want core banking without an account fee.

SoFi Coach is also Free for SoFi members with banking, borrowing or investing services. Coach/Relay combines budgeting, account linking, spending and cash-flow tracking, net-worth tracking and credit-score monitoring; the Coach plan has no charge for eligible members. These free tools are most compelling when paired with SoFi membership, rather than as a standalone budgeting subscription.

SoFi Plus costs 10.00 USD per month, billed monthly from the initial subscription date. It adds financial planning, enhanced savings benefits, investment match benefits and borrowing discounts. SoFi Plus is for members who expect to use those benefits enough to justify a recurring charge; readers who only need the free checking account or Coach have reason to stay on the no-cost options. The Plus APY is 4.50% on up to $20K in a SoFi Bank savings account. Separately, SoFi advertises up to 4.20% savings APY for up to six months with qualifying deposits, so the stated rates are conditional rather than a universal return.

Platforms

SoFi is available on Android, iOS, macOS, web and Windows, with mobile apps for both major mobile platforms. Coach is accessed through the SoFi app. SoFi says its official mobile app is distributed only through the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

Who it's for

SoFi suits U.S. consumers who want to connect outside accounts, track a budget and credit score, and potentially bring banking and investing into the same financial relationship. It is less suitable for people who need Relay or checking and savings outside the United States, or who want a budgeting service that stands apart from a broader financial provider.

Pros and cons

Pros: Relay combines budgeting, cash-flow and net-worth tracking, credit monitoring and account connections from more than 12,000 institutions, making it a broad view of finances.
Pros: Free checking and savings has no account, service or maintenance fee and no minimum balance requirement.
Pros: Coach offers free, 24-7 chat guidance and can handle transfers and account opening without claiming to pick stocks or trade.
Cons: Relay, checking and savings, and several other services are U.S.-only, limiting the platform's usefulness for international users.
Cons: Enhanced savings, investment and borrowing benefits sit behind SoFi Plus at 10.00 USD per month, so members need to weigh those benefits against a continuing monthly charge.

Verdict

SoFi is a strong choice for U.S. users who want budgeting and financial tracking alongside banking and investing, especially if they qualify for free Coach access. Its central advantage is the breadth of services in one platform; its chief limitation is that several core products are geographically restricted and SoFi Plus costs extra for enhanced benefits. Choose it if that combination fits your financial life, and look elsewhere if you want a location-independent or standalone budgeting tool.
