Overview

RevenueCat gives developers a shared system for managing in-app purchases and subscriptions across supported platforms. It suits teams building subscription apps that need purchase infrastructure alongside monetization experiments and reporting. Its central trade-off is that Pro’s free allowance ends at $2,500 in monthly tracked revenue, after which the fee is tied to revenue tracked.

Founded in 2017, RevenueCat combines a Purchases SDK with remotely configurable paywalls, analytics, and web billing. The combination is useful for teams that want to work on purchase flows and monetization in one platform, but the revenue-based charge deserves attention as an app grows.

Its capabilities also place it in Game Monetization Software and Customer Lifetime Value Software.

Key features

Purchases and monetization

The Purchases SDK implements purchases and subscriptions across platforms and syncs tokens with RevenueCat’s server. That shared implementation is a strong fit for developers managing subscriptions across app environments. Remotely configurable paywalls and A/B tests for pricing models let teams change purchase presentation and compare approaches without treating monetization as a one-time setup.

Reporting and integrations

Dashboard reporting covers 40+ metrics, supported by automated daily normalized data deliveries and real-time webhook notifications. Predictive customer lifetime value, profitability metrics, cohort analysis, and customer segmentation give teams several ways to examine subscriber performance. Data refresh is real-time, and the forecast horizon is fixed.

RevenueCat detects events server-side from app store subscription changes and can forward them to configured third-party tools. Integrations include Adjust, AppsFlyer, Meta Ads, Amplitude, Mixpanel, Braze, Intercom, Slack, Segment, Stripe, and Paddle. This is useful for teams routing subscription events into their existing analytics, messaging, and billing tools.

Web billing

RevenueCat Web supports RevenueCat Billing, Stripe Billing, and Paddle Billing, with a web SDK, purchase links, paywalls, funnels, and external purchase sync options. That breadth makes it relevant to app teams extending purchase flows to the web, while teams seeking only a narrowly focused in-app purchase layer may not need the added scope.

Pricing

RevenueCat uses a freemium model. Pro is free up to $2,500 in monthly tracked revenue; after that, it charges 1% of tracked revenue. The free threshold gives newer or lower-revenue apps room to use the plan without a charge, but the percentage fee makes cost rise with tracked revenue.

Growth Tools has custom pricing. It charges 1% of monthly tracked revenue on what you track and includes paywalls, web-to-app funnels, A/B/n testing, and the option to use your own in-app purchase infrastructure. It is aimed at teams focused on these growth tools, but the percentage-based charge remains relevant as revenue scales.

Enterprise has custom pricing and usage. It adds volume discounts, flexible tracking configurations, dedicated support, and custom SLAs for high-volume apps. Those terms make it the better fit for larger operations needing tailored tracking or service commitments; smaller teams may have little reason to take on a custom plan.

Platforms

RevenueCat supports Android, iOS, macOS, web, and API. This range suits developers operating across mobile and web, though the product’s purchase and subscription focus is less relevant to software without those billing needs.

Who it's for

RevenueCat is best suited to developers building subscription products across platforms, from teams establishing purchase flows to companies scaling to large customer bases. Its paywalls, experiments, reporting, and integrations are especially useful when monetization decisions need to connect with broader product and marketing systems. Businesses without app or web subscription billing, or those unwilling to pay a percentage above the Pro threshold, should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros: The Purchases SDK spans platforms and syncs tokens server-side, reducing the need to treat each app environment as a separate subscription system.
Pros: Remote paywalls, pricing tests, and reporting of 40+ metrics support ongoing monetization work rather than just purchase implementation.
Pros: Web billing and integrations connect app subscription activity with web purchase flows and third-party tools.
Cons: Pro charges 1% of tracked revenue after $2,500 in monthly tracked revenue, so the free start does not mean costs stay fixed as revenue grows.
Cons: Growth Tools and Enterprise both use custom pricing, making their costs less straightforward to assess before contacting sales.

Alternatives

For broader customer engagement across web, desktop, and mobile platforms, Pushwoosh is a freemium alternative with a free plan that includes 1,000 MAU, five AI requests per day, and 20,000 email sends per month alongside unlimited push notifications.

Siftmo is a web-based freemium alternative with a free trial and order-based plans: Starter covers up to 50 monthly orders, while Growth costs 29.00 USD per month for up to 500 monthly orders. It is worth considering when monthly order volume, rather than app subscription infrastructure, is the main concern.

WorthSignal is a free option across web, desktop, Linux, and self-hosted environments.

SaaSFlow offers a freemium API and web option with all features, unlimited users, and unlimited data sources on its free plan up to €120k ARR (€10k MRR); it may suit teams prioritizing SaaS revenue operations over app purchase management.

Klaviyo is a freemium web platform whose free plan covers up to 250 active profiles, 500 email sends per month, and $5 of mobile messages per month, making it a distinct option for teams centered on customer messaging.

Reaktion is a paid alternative for Android, iOS, and web, with a Rise plan at 169.00 USD per month for 1,000 orders and one included store.

Mowt is a paid Android, API, iOS, and web option; its Startup plan costs 79.00 USD per month and includes up to $15k MRR, a real-time dashboard, and full mobile app access.

TrueProfit is a paid option across Android, iOS, web, and extension, with Basic at 35.00 USD per month for 300 orders and a $0.3 charge per extra order, capped at a $300 surcharge.

Verdict

Choose RevenueCat if you build subscription apps across platforms and want purchase implementation, configurable paywalls, experiments, and reporting in one system. Its breadth is the main reason to choose it; the revenue-linked Pro fee and custom pricing for higher-tier plans are the reasons to compare alternatives before scaling.
