Overview

Kaizen is a focus app that brings a Pomodoro timer, task and habit tracking, and shared quiet work rooms together. It is best suited to students and solo workers who want a structured routine and a little social accountability without joining a video call. The free plan covers a modest personal setup; regular use across several projects or habits makes the Premium limits more relevant.

Key features

The timer offers presets, custom sessions from 5 to 180 minutes, and a stopwatch. That is flexible enough for short cycles and longer work blocks, while stopwatch mode suits people who want to track a session without committing to a countdown.

Focus Rooms accommodate 2 to 50 people. Free users can join public rooms or private rooms with a code, while creating rooms requires Premium. There is no video or microphone: members see each other's status and focus tag. That keeps the emphasis on quiet accountability rather than conversation, so Kaizen is a poor fit for teams whose coworking depends on face-to-face interaction.

Tasks include an Inbox, subtasks, priorities, due dates, estimates, and automatic time tracking. Habits can be checked off or fed by timer activity, connecting routines to focused work. The free caps—7 active tasks and 5 habits—are workable for a simple personal system, but may become restrictive for anyone juggling multiple projects or routines.

App blocking works on iOS and Android, with 3 apps included free. It is unavailable on web and Windows, an important limitation for people who need to curb desktop distractions. Progress tracking covers streaks, focus time, sessions, and time spent in rooms; free statistics reach back 30 days, while Premium adds all-time history.

Pricing

Kaizen is freemium, with a free plan, a 14-day trial, and two Premium options. Free costs 0.00 EUR per free, billed Forever free. It includes 7 tasks, 5 habits, blocking for 3 apps, access to any Focus Room, and 30 days of statistics. That is a useful way to maintain a small routine and join rooms without paying, but it does not include room creation or unlimited tracking.

Premium Monthly costs 3.99 EUR per month, billed Monthly. Premium Yearly costs 39.99 EUR per year, billed €39.99 billed yearly/month. Both add unlimited tasks, habits, and app blocking, the ability to create Focus Rooms, the full music and background library, and all-time statistics. Monthly suits users who want flexibility; yearly is the lower stated total over a year, but requires committing to annual billing. Either paid plan is the more practical choice once the free caps interfere with everyday use.

Platforms

Kaizen runs on Android, iOS, web, and Windows, and account data syncs across them. That makes it possible to carry tasks and progress between mobile and desktop, although app blocking remains mobile-only. The app supports English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Dutch.

The privacy policy says servers are located in Germany and globally and describes technical and organisational safeguards, while warning that complete security of data transmissions or storage cannot be guaranteed. Payment data is handled and stored by Stripe, Apple, and Google. Support emails and feature requests go directly to the developer, who also invites contact by email and Discord.

Who it's for

Kaizen suits students and individual workers who want a timer, a lightweight work system, and quiet company in the same app. It is particularly appealing to people who switch between mobile and desktop and value rooms without cameras or microphones. It is less suitable for desktop app blocking, video-based coworking, or large personal task and habit systems that need generous free limits.

Pros and cons

Pro: Free access to public and code-protected private rooms makes shared focus available without a subscription.
Pro: Tasks, habits, timers, and automatic time tracking keep planning and focus activity connected.
Pro: Sync across mobile, web, and Windows supports a cross-device routine.
Con: Free accounts stop at 7 active tasks, 5 habits, 3 blocked apps, and 30 days of statistics, which can constrain a growing routine.
Con: App blocking is absent on web and Windows, limiting its usefulness against desktop distractions.
Con: Creating rooms and accessing all-time statistics require Premium.

Alternatives

For a broader selection, see Virtual Study Room Apps.

Choose Cosmos Video if video calls and recording matter more than Kaizen's camera-free rooms; its free plan allows 4 online users in a space, calls up to 4 people, 25 MB uploads, and 7-day recording retention. FLOWN is another option for guided coworking sessions: its free plan allows 4 community sessions per month, all on Fridays, and permits attendance at private community sessions but not hosting public ones.

StudyStream may suit someone who wants focus rooms on macOS as well as mobile and web; its free plan allows one hour daily. Focusmate offers 3 free sessions per week and is a better starting point for people whose priority is scheduled accountability sessions.

Cofocus is a web-only option with 3 free sessions a week, while Yakura StudySquad is another web-based choice, with a free tier for any Yakura account. If avoiding subscriptions is the priority, WhumbleZone is free on Android, iOS, and web, though its terms do not promise an uptime SLA.

Verdict

Choose Kaizen if you want a synced focus routine that combines planning, habits, and quiet coworking rooms without video. Its free room access and connected tracking are the strongest reasons to start here; its mobile-only blocking and tight free caps are the reasons to look elsewhere or move to Premium.
