Overview

Crazy Egg brings heatmaps, recordings, web analytics, conversion analytics, A/B testing, surveys, popup calls to action, and error tracking into one website-focused toolkit. The range is useful when a team wants to investigate a problem and act on it without stitching together separate products. Installation uses a code snippet in the site head, with integrations for Drupal, Google Tag Manager, Joomla, Magento, Segment, Shopify, Squarespace, Wix, and WordPress.

Conversion and survey notifications can go to email, Slack, an API endpoint, or Zapier. Google Analytics 4 integration supplies traffic data for A/B tests, and the API can create and update heatmaps or expose results in other applications. These connections give teams room to fit Crazy Egg into existing workflows, though the product remains centered on websites rather than native apps.

Key features

Heatmaps and recordings

Click, Scroll, Confetti, Overlay, and List reports give teams multiple ways to examine page interactions and movement. Recordings, mobile capture, and rage-click detection add context to aggregate reports, helping teams distinguish a page-level pattern from a specific point of friction. Recording retention ranges from six months on Starter to two years on Plus and above.

Conversion and privacy controls

Web Analytics, Conversion Analytics, surveys, A/B testing, popups, and error tracking support a cycle of finding and addressing conversion problems. Recordings automatically mask email, password, numeric, and text fields as well as sliders and dials, with masking performed in the browser before data reaches Crazy Egg's servers. Crazy Egg says it complies with GDPR, CCPA, and HIPAA obligations; it encrypts data in transit and at rest, anonymizes IP addresses, and says it does not sell or track users across websites.

Pricing

The Free plan is free and includes Web Analytics, Instant Heatmaps, Conversion Analytics, and surveys. Instant Heatmaps are free forever, with no credit card or website limits; they track up to 1,000 sessions per day and retain 30 days of data. This is a useful starting point for core analysis, but the free session cap and retention period constrain longer-term or higher-volume work.

Paid plans are billed annually, include unlimited team members and website domains, and have no overage charges. A 30-day free trial requires a credit card, with billing starting after the trial. When a monthly tracking limit is reached, collection pauses and resumes on the first of the next month, so buyers must choose a quota that leaves room for traffic variation.

Starter: 29.00 USD per month billed annually, with 5,000 tracked pageviews, 5 heatmap reports, 50 recordings per month, and six months of recording storage. It suits smaller sites with modest analysis needs, but its low report and recording quotas are restrictive for active optimization.
Plus: 99.00 USD per month billed annually, with 150,000 tracked pageviews, 75 heatmap reports, 1,000 recordings per month, and two years of storage. This is the more practical tier for teams running regular analysis across multiple sites.
Pro: 249.00 USD per month billed annually, with 500,000 tracked pageviews, 100 heatmap reports, 5,000 recordings per month, and two years of storage. It fits higher-traffic organizations that need substantially more recording capacity.
Enterprise: 599.00 USD per month billed annually, with 1,000,000 tracked pageviews, 200 heatmap reports, 10,000 recordings per month, and two years of storage. It targets organizations with large volumes, although collection still pauses if the monthly limit is reached.

Platforms

Crazy Egg supports web, API, and extension platforms. Its installation integrations cover major site platforms and tag-management tools, and its API can feed heatmap creation and results into other applications. Mobile capture is supported for website behavior, but the platform list does not extend to native Android or iOS apps.

Who it's for

Entrepreneurs, small businesses, growth marketers, agencies, ecommerce and lead-generation teams, education organizations, and UX/UI designers are among its likely audiences. Unlimited domains and seats are especially useful to agencies and teams managing several sites. It is less suited to buyers who need month-to-month paid terms or uninterrupted collection above their selected quota.

Pros and cons

Pro: Free Instant Heatmaps have no website limit, making it possible to begin visual analysis without a paid commitment.
Pro: Every plan includes unlimited domains and team members, avoiding added seat or site charges as teams expand.
Pro: Heatmaps, recordings, analytics, testing, surveys, and conversion tools cover several stages of website optimization in one product.
Con: Annual billing on every paid plan makes the commitment less flexible for seasonal projects or teams still evaluating fit.
Con: Tracking stops at monthly caps rather than continuing with overage charges, risking gaps in collection for sites that outgrow their quota.
Con: Starter includes only 5 heatmap reports and 50 recordings monthly, which may be too constrained for teams investigating many pages.

Alternatives

Consider Fullstory if a free session replay option with one-year replay and product-analytics retention and 10 user seats better fits the team; its free plan includes 30,000 sessions and 5,000 server-side events.

Zoho PageSense is worth comparing for its free allowance of 5,000 monthly tracked users, one project, one month of retention, and five goals. UXCam may suit teams evaluating app-oriented platforms, with Android and iOS support and a free plan of 3,000 sessions monthly across two app keys.

Choose OpenReplay when self-hosting matters: its free open-source option supports on-premises or any cloud provider, with self-managed storage and retention. Plerdy offers a free package with 100 heatmaps daily and 500 video sessions, a different usage mix for smaller-scale needs.

Microsoft Clarity is a free alternative with unlimited heatmaps, websites, team members, and no traffic limits. ReplayBird is another option to compare for a free 1,000-session monthly allowance. Matomo is the alternative to consider when self-hosting is a priority; its Community plan is free forever with unlimited users and hits.

Verdict

Crazy Egg is a sound choice for website teams that want visual behavior analysis, recordings, and conversion tools with no seat or domain fees. The free heatmaps are a low-risk entry point, while Plus and higher tiers offer room for sustained analysis. Look elsewhere if annual commitment or paused collection at fixed monthly limits would leave important traffic untracked.
