In their own words
DocuGenerate
DocuGenerate creates PDF documents by filling Word-style templates with values from JSON or spreadsheet data. Templates can be uploaded as DOCX, DOC, ODT, TXT or SQL files, and listed data formats include JSON, XLSX, XLS, ODS and CSV. Merge tags can place images, tables, lists, conditional content and QR codes into a document. A REST API is available on every plan, including Free, alongside integrations such as Zapier, Make, n8n and Pipedream, plus connectors or plugins for Bubble, Coda, Power Apps, Xano and Backendless. Usage counts generated documents rather than pages, so a 100-page report counts as one document. The Free plan is free and includes 20 documents per month, two templates, API and integrations access, single-document generation and one concurrent document. Plus is $19 a month and includes 500 documents monthly; additional documents cost $0.04 each. Generated files stay stored until deleted, while data used to generate them is described as transient and not stored. Listed processing and storage regions include the United States, European Union, United Kingdom and Australia.
PDFMonkey
PDFMonkey is a cloud document-generation API that turns templates and dynamic data into files. Templates can be built in a visual drag-and-drop editor or written in HTML, CSS, and Liquid; JSON data can be sent through the REST API to generate documents. Its Chrome-based renderer supports JavaScript, external fonts, images, charts, and other web technologies. Outputs include PDF, PNG, WebP, and JPG, and bulk generation from datasets is supported. Connectors include Zapier, Make, n8n, Workato, Bubble, Glide, and InvoiceBerry; developer tools include Ruby and Node.js SDKs and webhooks. API traffic uses HTTPS/TLS, dynamic data is stored in encrypted database columns, and generated files are kept in private S3 buckets with one-hour presigned URLs. PDFMonkey states that it has no formal SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certification. The free plan allows 20 documents per month with one-day retention and a 30-second generation limit, and excludes external images, fonts, CSS, and JavaScript. Paid plans start at €5/mo.
