Overview

Dropbox Sign is an online service for requesting and tracking electronic signatures on agreements. It is best suited to individuals and businesses with recurring document workflows, or product teams that want signing built into a website. It combines reusable templates and API access with mobile apps, but the free tier’s three-request monthly limit is restrictive for regular use.

Key features

Templates preserve prepared fields for documents sent repeatedly, reducing setup on routine requests. Sequential signing puts signers in a defined order, while identity verification and an audit trail support accountability. There is no bulk sending, so teams dispatching large batches of agreements should look elsewhere.

Signatures are legally binding under the U.S. ESIGN Act of 2000 and have the same legal standing as pen-and-paper signatures. Senders and signers can use 22 languages. Dropbox Sign says it complies with SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, eIDAS, and GDPR, and encrypts documents at rest with AES 256-bit encryption.

Embedded signing gives website users an in-app signing experience. API access includes official SDKs for Python, Ruby, PHP, Java, NodeJS, and C#, with OAuth 2.0 authentication to secure endpoints and user data. Integrations include Google Docs, Google Drive, Google Workspace, Microsoft Word, Microsoft OneDrive, Salesforce, HubSpot, Slack, and Zapier. Email support is available to all users, with responses expected within one working day, Monday through Friday.

Pricing

Dropbox Sign uses a freemium model. Free is free and allows three signature requests per month, making it suitable for occasional personal use rather than a steady stream of agreements.

Essentials costs 15.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and includes five templates and up to five users before contacting sales. It suits smaller workflows that need more than the free request allowance, though the template selection is limited. Standard costs 25.00 USD per month, billed monthly, includes 15 templates, and starts at two users; the larger template allowance better fits teams with several repeat documents. Premium has custom pricing for large teams and adds advanced signer tools and advanced reporting.

The pricing note also gives paid pricing from $10.05/mo (annual) and a 30-day trial. That annual starting price is distinct from the monthly-billed Essentials and Standard prices. Mobile signature apps are available on iOS and Android.

Platforms

Dropbox Sign supports web, iOS, Android, and API use. The mobile apps make it usable away from a desktop, while API access and embedded signing are relevant to organizations integrating signature requests into a product or workflow.

Who it's for

Choose Dropbox Sign for individual or business workflows built around repeatable agreements, ordered signing, and request tracking. Its integrations may suit teams already working with Google, Microsoft, Salesforce, HubSpot, Slack, or Zapier. It is a weaker fit for high-volume batch sending, and the free plan is too limited for frequent requests.

Pros and cons

Pros: Reusable templates, sequential signing, identity verification, and an audit trail cover useful parts of recurring agreement workflows.
Pros: API SDKs, OAuth 2.0, and embedded signing support teams that need to incorporate signing into their own websites or systems.
Pros: iOS and Android apps, 22 languages, and a broad set of named integrations give individuals and businesses multiple ways to work with requests.
Cons: The free plan permits only three requests per month, limiting its usefulness beyond occasional signing.
Cons: Bulk sending is unavailable, adding friction for organizations sending agreements in batches.
Cons: Premium uses custom pricing, while Standard starts at two users; neither is as straightforward for a solo buyer to assess as the free tier or Essentials.

Alternatives

For another freemium signature service with a free allowance of three documents per month and support across Android, iOS, web, Windows, macOS, and API, consider Secured Signing. Its Notary Business Annual Plan is 361430.00 USD per year, a sharply different price point from Dropbox Sign’s monthly plans.

Signority API is another freemium option with API, self-hosted, web, and Windows platforms; choose it when those platform options are a closer fit. For private individuals, students, and associations seeking free electronic signing, sproof sign offers a Private Plan; its listed Single plan costs 15.00 EUR per month.

BoldSign may suit a solo user seeking a defined free envelope allowance: its Essential plan includes 25 envelopes per month, two templates, and one user. Signeasy is worth considering when unlimited signing is more important than sending volume: its Personal plan costs 10.00 USD per month, billed $120 billed yearly, for one user and five contracts sent for signature monthly.

Adobe Scan and Adobe Acrobat Sign are alternatives to compare if either better matches your needs. DocuSeal offers a free Basic plan with 10 field types and 10 request emails per month, while its Pro plan includes unlimited signature requests and bulk send; it is the clearer fit when batch sending is essential.

Verdict

Dropbox Sign is a good choice for individuals and businesses that send recurring agreements, value prepared templates and tracking, or need API-based or embedded signing. Its mobile apps, integrations, and signing controls support a range of workflows. Look elsewhere if bulk dispatch is central, and weigh the free plan’s three-request ceiling and the paid plans’ monthly costs against your expected volume before committing.
