In their own words
EdgeCase Equalizer
EdgeCase Equalizer is free, open-source practice management software for solo therapists who want local control of their records and tools. Client files combine sessions, communications, absences, items, and uploads in timelines with full edit histories. Billing handles per-client fees, sliding scales, guardian splits, couples and family therapy, statements, partial payments, and write-offs. Income and expenses can be recorded with receipts and category reports. An optional local AI scribe drafts or edits session notes while session content stays on the computer. Data is stored in encrypted SQLite with encrypted attachments; backups can remain local or sync to a cloud folder, and restoration is available from the login screen. Appointments export as .ics or can be added to Apple Calendar. It runs on macOS and Linux, with source for Python 3.11+ on any platform, and is licensed AGPL-3.0.
PracticeRunner
PracticeRunner brings therapy practice scheduling, clinical records, intake, billing, payments, secure communication, supervision and coordination into one system. It supports individual, couple, family, therapy-group, consultation and workshop services. Documentation includes progress notes, a Session Workspace, source material, intake forms, assessments, diagnoses and document storage. Optional AI can prepare sessions, draft notes from transcripts or other source material, extract text with OCR and revise notes; clinicians review drafts before saving or signing. Billing covers invoices, AutoPay, automatic invoicing, card and bank payments, recorded external payments, superbills, statements and CMS-1500 claims. Google Calendar sync works one way: changes there do not update PracticeRunner appointments, and Google events are not imported as appointments. Compatible calendar apps can subscribe to private, read-only feeds. The client portal, payment processing and insurance claims are listed. The Professional plan is $39/month, and the site also lists a free Starter plan for 30 days, capped at 10 active clients and one clinician. Platforms are Android, iOS and web.
