Overview

EdrawMax is a diagramming suite for people who move between formats and types of visual work, from flowcharts and floor plans to UML and network diagrams. Its strongest case is breadth: extensive libraries, AI tools and file compatibility in one product. The free plan is restrictive for finished work, so regular users should weigh its shape, page and watermark limits against the annual subscriptions.

Key features

Diagramming and AI

EdrawMax Online covers more than 210 diagram types. The advertised library of 20,000+ free templates and 26,000+ symbols gives users a wide range of starting points, especially when they need to produce different kinds of diagrams rather than specialize in one. The product also lists 40+ AI generators and tools, spanning diagramming, presentations, drawing, symbols, analysis, copywriting, OCR and stickers. That range is appealing for varied workflows, but the Free plan's 500 AI tokens make it a limited way to assess sustained AI use.

Formats, storage and publishing

Import support for Visio, SVG and CAD files helps users bring existing work into EdrawMax. Exports include PNG, JPG, PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SVG and Visio, but free exports carry a watermark, and free imports of Visio, SVG and CAD are limited. Basic removes the export watermark and includes unlimited Visio and CAD import. Premium users can save and open files directly through Google Drive and Dropbox. EdrawMax also supports data import, interactive publishing and team collaboration.

Online, desktop and mobile

The browser-based version processes files on EdrawMax's servers; the desktop version processes documents locally. That distinction gives users a choice between browser access and local processing. Android and iOS apps can export diagrams as images or PDFs. EdrawMax Online supports English, French, German, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese.

Security and support

EdrawMax says file transfers use SSL encryption, cloud data is stored on Alicloud, and physical, technical and administrative safeguards protect against unauthorized access and disclosure. It also advertises rapid technical support and a 30-day money-back guarantee under accepted circumstances. These are useful assurances, though they do not change the practical choice between server-side processing online and local desktop processing.

Pricing

The Free plan is free and includes 500 AI tokens, 100M cloud storage and three editable cloud files. It caps general diagrams at 60 shapes, specific diagrams at 120 shapes and documents at two pages; exports carry a watermark. Limited Visio, SVG and CAD imports make this best for trying the product or making small diagrams, not polished deliverables or larger projects.

Basic costs 5.90 USD per month, billed annually at $70.8, cancel anytime. It raises the AI allowance to 10,000 tokens per month, removes shape and page limits, provides 1G cloud storage, unlimited Visio and CAD import, and exports without a watermark. It is the practical step up for individuals who need full-sized documents or clean exports.

Unlimited costs 8.25 USD per month, billed annually at $99, cancel anytime. It includes Basic features, unlimited AI tokens, unlimited community paid templates, 1G cloud storage and watermark-free exports. This suits frequent AI users or those who want the paid template library; otherwise Basic covers the stated core limits for less.

Business has custom pricing, with a quote requested for 20+ users. It adds multi-user control, deployment support, volume discounts and senior technical support, making it the relevant option for larger organizations rather than solo users. A 7-day trial is also offered.

Platforms

EdrawMax runs on Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, the web and Windows. The platform range gives users options across desktop, browser and mobile, though mobile's stated export capability is narrower than the desktop and online format range.

Who it's for

EdrawMax is a strong fit for individuals and teams that create several kinds of diagrams, exchange files with Visio or CAD users, or need many output formats. Its templates and symbols can shorten the path to varied diagrams, while annual paid plans remove the free plan's most consequential limits. It is less compelling for occasional users who can work within the free caps, or for anyone who does not want server-side file processing in the browser version.

Pros and cons

Broad diagram coverage: More than 210 diagram types, plus extensive template and symbol libraries, suit users with varied visual work.
Useful file interchange: Visio, SVG and CAD imports and exports to common office and image formats support mixed workflows, though free imports are limited and free exports are watermarked.
Choice of processing model: Online processing is server-side, while desktop processing is local, so users can choose according to their workflow.
Free plan has hard practical ceilings: Shape, page and editable-cloud-file limits make it a trial ground rather than a comfortable option for larger or finished diagrams.
Paid plans are billed annually: The monthly-equivalent prices come with annual billing, a commitment worth considering before upgrading.

Alternatives

draw.io is the better fit for readers who want a free, open-source option with no sign-up required. Creately may suit collaboration-first users: its free plan offers unlimited canvases and collaborators, but limits each canvas to 45 items. Microsoft Visio is worth considering for readers who specifically want a paid diagramming product on macOS, web or Windows; its Visio Plan 1 costs 5.00 USD per month, paid yearly, and includes 2 GB of OneDrive for work or school storage. ProcessOn is another freemium option, with a free version limited to nine personal files and three collaborators. Cacoo offers an always-free plan with unlimited users and real-time editing, but caps users at six sheets and PNG exports. Lucidchart may work for users whose needs fit its free allowance of three editable documents and 60 shapes per document. Eclipse Papyrus and Archi are free options to consider for readers seeking modeling software.

Verdict

Choose EdrawMax if you need one product for many diagram types, extensive format support and a choice between browser-based and local processing. Its paid plans make those strengths more practical by removing the free plan's shape, page and watermark limits. Look elsewhere if you only need occasional basic diagrams, want an entirely free workflow, or prefer not to process files on a provider's servers.
