Overview

FreeSWITCH provides a foundation for routing calls, bridging video, transcoding media and connecting protocols. It supports inbound and outbound calling, SIP and call recording, and can underpin carriers, contact centers and communications products. The project dates to 2006; SignalWire, founded by the original creators, is its primary maintainer.

The open-source edition is licensed under MPL 2.0 and can be used in production at no charge. That makes it a strong fit when a team wants a flexible media and call-processing core rather than a packaged telephony product. Self-hosting is not a set-and-forget option: teams need dedicated resources to maintain on-premises infrastructure. A free SignalWire account is required to access packages and downloads.

Key features

Call control and integrations

The Event Socket exposes call control, channel management and internal events over TCP to external processes. This gives developers a way to connect their own applications to call behavior, while making integration work part of the implementation. Documented options include HTTP backends and embedded Lua, Perl, Python, JavaScript and Java.

The mod_signalwire module connects FreeSWITCH to SignalWire for inbound and outbound PSTN calling over a persistent WebSocket session. Named IP allow and deny lists can be applied to SIP profiles and the Event Socket, providing network access controls for those interfaces.

Commercial modules and support

Commercial modules add answering machine detection and licensed G.729 Annex A encoding and decoding for transcoding. The open-source edition receives community support; FreeSWITCH Pro adds commercial support, hardened builds and priority patches. Those options matter to teams that need vendor backing, but they sit outside the no-cost community offering.

Pricing

FreeSWITCH Open Source is free. It is self-hosted, licensed under MPL 2.0, and includes community support; the license permits downloading, modifying and running it in production. The trade-off is that the team handles infrastructure maintenance and does not receive the commercial support, hardened builds or priority patches offered through FreeSWITCH Pro.

SignalWire Platform has custom pricing. It is cloud-hosted and provides a programmable layer around FreeSWITCH media engines, making it the hosted option for teams that want that platform layer rather than operating the entire deployment themselves.

FreeSWITCH Advantage also has custom pricing. It is self-hosted and includes commercial modules such as G.729A and answering machine detection, plus founder-level support. It is the relevant step up for teams that need those capabilities or a higher level of support while retaining self-hosting.

Platforms

FreeSWITCH supports Linux, macOS and Windows, as well as API and self-hosted use. The getting-started guide documents Debian and Ubuntu installation through SignalWire packages or a source build. Linux is therefore the clearest documented self-hosting route in these facts; teams considering other platforms should weigh their deployment requirements carefully.

Who it's for

FreeSWITCH suits communications engineers building carrier, contact-center or other voice and video systems who need control of call routing, protocol connectivity and media processing. It is particularly compelling when avoiding production license fees matters and the organization can provide the people and infrastructure to operate it. Teams that want a managed, ready-made calling product or cannot staff self-hosting should look elsewhere or consider SignalWire's cloud-hosted platform.

Pros and cons

Pros: Production use carries no license cost, and the open-source MPL 2.0 edition can be modified.
Pros: Call control, media processing, SIP and inbound and outbound calling give builders a broad technical foundation.
Pros: External control through the Event Socket and several documented integration languages suit systems that need to coordinate call behavior with other software.
Cons: Self-hosting requires dedicated maintenance resources, so the zero-cost license does not remove operational cost.
Cons: The open-source edition has community support; commercial support, hardened builds, priority patches and certain modules require commercial offerings.
Cons: Package and download access requires a free SignalWire account.

Alternatives

Asterisk is another free, open-source, self-hosted option with Linux and API support; consider it when that alternative telephony foundation better fits your requirements.

Voicent may suit teams looking for a freemium option with a defined free allowance of 100 minutes/texts and a Starter plan at 179.00 USD per month for 6,500 minutes/texts per month and unlimited campaigns.

SIP.IO is worth considering when a web-accessible option with a free tier for testing call flows, queues and contact-center functions is a better match.

Twilio Studio may fit teams that want a web-based flow builder with 1,000 flow executions per month free.

Telnyx Text-to-Speech API is a paid alternative with a pay-as-you-go option, a $0 monthly minimum and no contract, for readers seeking that API offering rather than a self-hosted voice and video framework.

Avaya Aura Private Cloud is an option for readers seeking a private-cloud communications product with pay-per-user pricing and no stated user scalability limit.

NCH IVM Telephone Answering Attendant is a paid alternative for teams focused on telephone answering attendant software.

Ozonetel IVR System is another option for readers looking for a paid web-based IVR system.

Verdict

Choose FreeSWITCH if you are building voice or video communications infrastructure and want a capable, modifiable foundation without production license fees. Its main advantage is control over call and media handling; its main cost is the operational commitment of self-hosting, with stronger support and some modules reserved for commercial plans. Teams unable to take on that work should favor a hosted platform or a more packaged alternative.
