Overview

Rive brings 2D animation, character rigging and motion graphics into an editor built to deliver content into other products. It suits designers and product teams who need animated assets to run across several kinds of device or framework. Its breadth of runtimes and export formats is a strong fit for product animation, though its file and seat caps make plan choice important for collaboration.

Key features

Rive combines animation tools with a route from authoring to deployment. The editor is available as a desktop app, and its command-line support covers macOS, Linux and Windows. Open-source runtimes run Rive files natively; integrations include Web, iOS, macOS, Android, Flutter, React, React Native, Unity and Unreal. Rive content can also run on consoles, TVs and vehicles, making it relevant beyond conventional web and mobile interfaces.

The six export formats—RIV, REV, MP4, GIF, PNG sequence and WebM—give teams options for both Rive-native delivery and common media outputs. The GPU-accelerated renderer is described as running at 120fps with perfect quality, a useful performance claim for animation intended to play inside products. Rive also includes an Agent: Free and Cadet have limited access, while Voyager includes advanced models.

Collaboration is the main practical dividing line between plans. Free permits three collaborative files; Cadet and Voyager allow unlimited files, but cap seats at three and 25. That makes Cadet a reasonable step up for a small team that outgrows the free file allowance, while larger groups need Voyager or Enterprise.

Pricing

Rive is freemium. The Free plan costs $0 per seat per month and includes editor access to learn, design, animate and code, with one project, three collaborative files and a 10 MB imported-asset limit. It is a useful way to explore the editor, but the project, file and asset caps constrain ongoing production.

Cadet costs $9.00 USD per month, billed annually, and permits up to three seats with unlimited files. It is the clearest fit for a small team shipping work into apps, products, vehicles or games; its trade-off is a hard three-seat ceiling and a limited Agent. Voyager costs $32.00 USD per month, billed annually, and raises the limit to 25 seats while adding Libraries and Agent access with advanced models. It fits teams scaling collaboration, though groups larger than 25 need another arrangement.

Enterprise costs $120.00 USD per month, billed annually, and is positioned for organizations with $10M+ annual revenue. It adds SSO, SOC2 Type II, dedicated support, a dedicated Slack channel, onboarding, training, a custom S3 bucket and the option to bring Rive to custom platforms, engines, products or hardware. This tier is aimed at large organizations with security and deployment needs; its revenue threshold makes it a poor fit for smaller teams.

Platforms

The editor is offered as a desktop app, with CLI support on macOS, Linux and Windows. Rive lists support for Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web and Windows. Runtime options extend to mobile, desktop and web as well as consoles, TVs and vehicles, with integrations spanning web frameworks, mobile platforms and game engines.

Who it's for

Rive is strongest for people creating interactive or product-bound 2D animation who need native runtimes, framework integrations or several export options. Solo learners can start free, and teams of up to three can use Cadet for unlimited files. It is less compelling for teams that need more seats without moving to Voyager, or for organizations that cannot meet Enterprise's stated revenue threshold but need its custom-runtime or security provisions.

Pros and cons

Broad runtime reach: Native runtimes and integrations across web, mobile, desktop and game engines make Rive useful when animation must ship inside products.
Multiple delivery formats: RIV, REV, MP4, GIF, PNG sequence and WebM cover native files and several media outputs.
Free entry has real constraints: One project, three collaborative files and a 10 MB imported-asset cap limit how far the free tier can stretch.
Team capacity jumps by tier: Cadet is capped at three seats and Voyager at 25, so growing teams must budget for a higher tier.
Enterprise has targeted extras: SSO, SOC2 Type II and custom runtimes matter to large organizations, but the $10M+ annual revenue positioning excludes many smaller buyers.

Alternatives

For a different animation workflow, Houdini, Live2D Cubism, Cascadeur, Animaker, Blender, Powtoon, Rokoko Studio and OpenToonz are alternatives to compare.

Verdict

Choose Rive if you need 2D animation that can move from an editor into a wide range of runtimes and integrations, and its seat and file limits suit your team. Its free tier makes exploration accessible, while Cadet and Voyager provide a clear path to larger collaborative workloads. Look elsewhere if those deployment strengths do not matter or the annual-billed tiers and seat caps do not fit your organization.
