In their own words
ink and Inky
ink is a text-first scripting language for branching game narratives, with logic and code placed within the story text. It is designed mainly for professional game development, though it can also be used to write and share choice-based interactive fiction. The companion Inky editor lets writers create, test, and export stories in one app. Its play pane updates while a story is being written, it highlights errors as they appear, and it can jump from a divert to its target. Inky exports stories as JSON or as a web page ready for customisation. The editor runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows. For Unity, an integration plugin recompiles ink files during editing and provides a previewer inside the Unity Editor; the maker also points to Inkpot, a container for using ink within Unreal Engine. ink, Inky, and the Unity plugin are free under the MIT license. Help is available through Discord and GitHub Discussions.
Narratyr
Narratyr is a visual authoring tool for creating branching dialogue, quests, and game narratives. Its node-based editor connects conversation elements and conditions, while quest tools support branching logic and a step-by-step debugger. The editor runs natively on Windows, Linux, and macOS. Exporters and runtime libraries are listed for Unreal Engine, Unity, and Godot, and the documented format can also be integrated into a custom engine. Unreal support is a UE5 plugin with Blueprint and C++ APIs; Unity uses a UPM package with a C# runtime, custom importer, and Addressables support; and the Godot 4 addon includes GDScript runtime and bindings. Projects use an open, human-readable text format intended for version control. Built-in AI chat can draft, rewrite, or design dialogue and quests; it can be disabled, prompts and conversations stay local, and MCP-compatible models can be connected. The Free plan includes all engine exporters and has a 500-node limit. Monthly costs $10 a month, and One-Time costs 150.00 USD once. The documentation describes Narratyr as still in development.
