Overview

Perplexity is an AI search and research service for people who want synthesized answers with citations rather than a list of pages to sort through. It suits curious readers and research-heavy professionals best, but its free tier is deliberately limited and its highest usage levels are expensive.

Its answers draw on real-time web research, with search also spanning files and connected apps. That combination makes it more useful for questions tied to work materials than a web-only answer engine, while inline citations let readers trace the claims behind a response.

Key features

Answers, models, and research

Every response includes inline citations, a meaningful advantage when a concise answer needs to be checked or followed up. Perplexity can choose among more than 20 leading models for a search, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Nemotron. That breadth is useful for varied queries, though access to particular models and tools depends on the plan.

Deep Research runs dozens of searches across hundreds of sources and produces a report. It is better suited to substantial research than the free tier's simple-question use. Unified search also covers uploaded files and connected apps alongside the open web, so Perplexity can bring personal or organizational material into a search.

Work tools and security

Pro adds Computer, premium data sources, web search, files, apps, model council, and model selection. More than 400 app connectors can be connected. The connector service states that it uses encryption, continuous security monitoring, point-in-time backups, and 30-day retention; Perplexity also states SOC 2 Type 2 certification, GDPR-aligned and HIPAA-aligned safeguards, and PCI compliance.

Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max do not use customer data to train AI models and include options for SSO, SCIM, audit logs, and data-retention controls. These are useful organizational controls, but API usage is not included in either plan and requires separate credits.

Pricing

Perplexity is freemium, with paid plans starting at 20.00 USD per month. The free tier costs 0.00 USD per free and has limited daily use for individuals; free usage is also described as limited weekly use suited to simple questions. It is a reasonable way to try basic queries, not a dependable choice for sustained research.

Pro costs 20.00 USD per month (billed $20 /mes). It is aimed at serious work, with expanded access, higher limits, Pro's added tools, and 4,000 additional Computer credits. It is the practical step up for individuals who need more than occasional answers, though usage remains below Max.

Max costs 200.00 USD per month (billed $200 /mes), with maximum Computer use, the highest usage limits, 35,000 additional Computer credits and 10,000 Computer credits per month. It raises Deep Research, resource-generation, and file-upload limits and allows more monthly video creation. Its advanced model access applies within Perplexity web, not programmatic API access. Max is designed for professionals, creators and writers, strategists, academic researchers, and power users; its price makes sense only when those higher limits matter. Max subscribers also receive priority support, dedicated infrastructure, and faster response times.

Education Pro has custom pricing for verified students and educators, with Pro features, Learn Mode, file and image uploads, and premium models. Enterprise Pro costs 40.00 USD per month per seat, billed $40 per seat per month, and includes 400 Pro Searches per week and 100 file uploads per week. Enterprise Max costs 325.00 USD per month per seat, billed $325 per seat per month, and includes 4,000 Pro Searches per week, 800 Browser Agent queries per month, 1,000 file uploads per week, 10,000 personal files, and 5,000 files per project; it also supports 15 monthly video generations.

Enterprise seat subscriptions can be monthly or yearly. Admins manage membership, seat counts, and organization billing, and seats are consolidated onto one invoice. Major credit cards are accepted, with invoice and wire transfer options available in checkout. There are no self-serve trials for Enterprise Pro or Enterprise Max. Accidental purchases can be addressed by contacting support under the refund policy. API credits are a separate cost for every plan where programmatic access is needed.

Platforms

Perplexity is available on the web, macOS, Windows, Android, and iOS, with API access listed. Its Comet browser is available on Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android. Personal Computer runs inside the macOS app and requires macOS 15 or later.

Who it's for

Choose Perplexity if cited web answers, multi-source research, or searching across web content, files, and apps are central to your work. Pro is the strongest fit for an individual who needs regular use and its expanded tools; Max is for users whose research, file, Computer, or video workloads justify a much higher monthly bill. Teams that need managed seats and organizational controls have Enterprise options, but should account for separate API billing. Casual question-askers can start free, while readers seeking sustained use at no cost will run into its limits.

Pros and cons

Pros: Inline citations accompany every answer, giving readers a way to inspect the basis of claims.
Pros: One search can cover the open web, files, and more than 400 connected apps, with multiple leading models available.
Pros: Enterprise plans include seat administration, consolidated billing, and privacy and access-control options.
Cons: Free use is limited and positioned for simple questions, so it is not a full-time research tier.
Cons: Max costs 200.00 USD per month, and advanced model access does not carry over to API use.
Cons: Enterprise Max costs 325.00 USD per month per seat, and Enterprise has no self-serve trial.

Alternatives

For a broader choice of tools, browse AI chatbots and assistants, AI Search Engines, or AI Research Assistants; AI Email Assistants is a more focused category.

Pick Claude if its free plan's allowance of up to five projects or its wider platform coverage, including Linux and an extension, better fits your needs. ChatGPT is another freemium option, though its free plan has limited messages with uploads and limited, slower image generation. Choose Microsoft Copilot if its Microsoft 365 Personal plan at 99.99 USD per year suits you better; its free access is subject to capacity and usage limits. Gemini offers a free tier with Deep Research and image generation and editing. Poe, LobeChat, AnythingLLM, and Grok are other alternatives.

Verdict

Perplexity is a strong choice for readers who want cited, current answers and a path from quick searches to research across web, files, and apps. Pro is the sensible paid tier for regular individual work; choose Max or Enterprise only when their higher quotas and work controls justify the cost. Look elsewhere if you need generous free use or expect API access to be part of the subscription.
