| Rating on TrustRadius | 9 out of 10 from 18 reviews | 8 out of 10 from 47 reviews |
| Security | MarkLogic describes its security as secure by default and lists role-based access controls, element or property-level security, built-in auditing, and AES-256 encryption at rest. | The security guidance says SQLite is extensively fuzz-tested and recommends defensive settings and lower input limits for applications accepting untrusted SQL. |
| Self-hosting | The product can be deployed on premises, in private or hybrid clouds, in customer-selected infrastructure and in containers. | SQLite has no separate server process and reads and writes ordinary local disk files, so applications embed and operate it themselves. |
| Supported systems | MarkLogic 12 supports Windows Server 2019/2022, Windows 10 development, Docker, RHEL 8/9, Amazon Linux 2023 and AWS Graviton with stated limitations. | Official support covers Android, BSD variants, iOS, Linux, macOS, Solaris, VxWorks and Windows. |
| What it does | MarkLogic Server is a unified enterprise data platform for storing, integrating, searching and analyzing complex data. | SQLite is an in-process C library that provides a self-contained, serverless, zero-configuration SQL database engine. |

In their own words
MarkLogic
MarkLogic is a semantic data platform built around a multi-model database and semantic AI technology. MarkLogic Server handles document, semantic graph, and geospatial data natively, and provides relational views for SQL analytics. Built-in search indexes information immediately and applies relevancy scoring. MarkLogic Data Hub ingests information from sources, indexes it for querying and search, then curates it through harmonization, mastering, and enrichment. The platform can run on premises, in virtualized environments, public cloud, or hybrid environments; managed hosting for Server and Data Hub includes installation, upgrades, backups, monitoring, and user management. Security capabilities include role-based controls, element- or property-level security, auditing, and AES-256 encryption at rest, with LDAP, Kerberos, and SAML authentication integration. It supports high availability, horizontal scaling, disaster recovery, rollbacks, and point-in-time recovery. The Developer edition permits up to 1TB of data for noncommercial use, while enterprise storage is listed as unlimited. A free plan and free trial are available, but no plan prices are listed.
SQLite
SQLite is a transactional SQL database engine that runs within an application, without a separate server process or configuration. Each complete database resides in a single disk file that works across platforms. Its SQL features include partial indexes, indexes on expressions, JSON, common table expressions, and window functions. Transactions are atomic, consistent, isolated, and durable, including after system crashes and power failures. A database file can have unlimited simultaneous readers, but only one writer at a time. The project recommends SQLite for device-local storage with low writer concurrency and less than a terabyte of content. SQLite is free for commercial or private use, with source code in the public domain. Downloads include source and precompiled binaries for Android, Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows, along with WebAssembly and JavaScript bundles for web applications. A free public forum is available, alongside paid private email and technical support options. The maker is based in Charlotte, North Carolina, and was founded in 2000.
