In their own words
OSSEC
OSSEC is an open-source host-based intrusion detection system for monitoring systems and network components. It analyzes logs, checks file integrity, monitors the Windows registry, detects rootkits, and can alert users in real time or take active response actions. Monitoring can be agent-based or agentless, and a centralized server applies policies across operating systems, with server-specific overrides. Alerts can use SMTP, SMS, and syslog; active response can block an attack immediately. The system runs on Linux, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, macOS, Solaris, and Windows, and supports self-hosted and cloud environments. OSSEC and OSSEC+ use command-line management; Atomic OSSEC editions add a management console and integrations with cloud services and other tools. OSSEC+ adds machine learning, ELK integration, threat sharing, and additional rules. Free OSSEC is listed at free; OSSEC+ is also free, with registration required. Atomic OSSEC is $5 a month per device. Atomic OSSEC SaaS offers a free 14-day trial for up to 10 endpoints.
PA File Sight
PA File Sight monitors file integrity, helps protect against ransomware, prevents data loss, and audits file access. It records who creates, reads, changes, moves, or deletes files and folders, with usernames, IP addresses, and computer names. For network-based ransomware, it uses honeypots, heuristics, and executable allow rules to detect and stop attacks. Real-time rules can identify file copying and block access to cloud folders or external drives. Lite and Ultra editions are available; Ultra adds historical reports and advanced alerts for copying activity or information leaks. The product is on-premises, keeping settings, databases, and network information on customer servers. An embedded database is the default, with Microsoft SQL Server as an alternative. Communications use SSL/TLS by default, while stored credentials are encrypted with Microsoft's CryptProtectData function. The central server and Satellite software require 64-bit Windows. The download includes a fully functional 30-day trial without a credit card or purchase. Listed prices include a 30.00 USD monthly Ultra subscription and perpetual licenses.
