Overview

UnivTrack is a free, open-source attendance tracker. Students mark each class as attended, absent, or holiday/no class, then use per-course absence counts to see which courses are approaching or exceeding their limits. That gives a student a timely view of attendance risk, but it depends on consistent manual recordkeeping rather than automatic capture.

Terms can have custom names and start dates, and run from 5 to 18 weeks. There is no limit on the number of terms. Once a term's final week has passed, it becomes read-only. That keeps completed records from changing, but prevents corrections through the app after the term ends.

Key features

Weekday schedules: Set up to five morning and five afternoon course slots for each weekday, Monday through Friday. This fits many standard timetables, but students with more than five courses in a period or classes on weekends will need another arrangement.
Attendance entries and catch-up: Each class can be marked Attended, Absent, or Holiday / No Class. Long-press actions can update previous weeks in bulk, useful for catching up on records without changing classes one at a time.
Live absence tracking: Counts are shown per course, with courses near or beyond their absence limit highlighted. This helps students spot a course needing attention, though it cannot compensate for entries that are late or incomplete.
Offline-capable PWA: UnivTrack is installable, with an offline app shell, home-screen icon, and full-screen mode. These features make it practical to keep as an app on supported devices, while the offline shell should not be mistaken for a claim that every function works offline.
Data and customization: The app uses Firebase Authentication and Cloud Firestore; user data is stored in the user's own Firebase project. It has English and Turkish translations with automatic browser-language detection. Self-hosting is possible using the project's local setup or Vercel deployment instructions, but requires configuring a Firebase project.

Pricing

Free — free forever. The plan includes unlimited academic terms and up to five morning and five afternoon course slots per weekday. There is no paid tier described, so the main trade-off is the fixed schedule cap rather than a term quota. UnivTrack is MIT-licensed.

Platforms

UnivTrack runs as a PWA on Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, and Linux, and supports self-hosting. Its installable, full-screen format suits students who want an app-like experience across common phone and desktop platforms without a separate native app requirement.

Who it's for

UnivTrack is a strong fit for individual college or high-school students with Monday-to-Friday schedules that fit its morning and afternoon slot limits, especially those who want unlimited terms at no cost. It is less suitable for people who need attendance captured automatically, need to revise completed-term records, or have irregular schedules that exceed the weekday structure. Self-hosting is an option for users prepared to configure Firebase themselves.

Pros and cons

Pro: Unlimited terms and a forever-free plan make it feasible to track multiple academic periods without a term quota.
Pro: Per-course live counts and warnings can help students respond before absences exceed a course limit.
Pro: Bulk updates for previous weeks make it easier to bring a manually maintained record up to date.
Con: Attendance is manual, so the usefulness of the counts depends on students recording classes reliably.
Con: The five-slot morning and afternoon caps and Monday-to-Friday schedule may not fit every timetable.
Con: Completed terms become read-only, ruling out later edits through the app.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, see Student Attendance Software. Choose QRaten instead if QR/code attendance and personal history are a better match; its free plan supports students and members across Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows, with a free trial also available. Bulsee is another free option for Android, iOS, and web users.

GatePass may suit schools that want a complete feature set across schools globally: it offers a one-full-term free trial without a card or commitment, followed by a Gate plan priced at 150000.00 UGX. For organizations with 500 or more users, Rollcallz offers custom enterprise pricing and supports Windows as well as mobile platforms.

Edusign is a paid organization-oriented alternative with a custom-priced Organisation Pro plan that includes 1,000 attendances per month, then €0.25 per signature, and 1,200 document signatures per year. Attendances is another paid option, with school-specific quotes based on student and staff numbers, modules, and scale.

AttenQR has a free plan and a one-time 9.99 USD option to remove ads permanently; it supports Android, iOS, and web. EduAttendance is a paid, per-school subscription quoted by student count, with Android, self-hosted, and web support.

Verdict

Choose UnivTrack if you are a student who wants a no-cost, term-based attendance log with live per-course absence tracking and a timetable within its weekday slot limits. Its strongest reason to choose it is the combination of unlimited terms and actionable absence counts; look elsewhere if you need automatic attendance capture, broader timetable flexibility, or editable records after a term ends.
