In their own words
SimpleXTerrain
SimpleXTerrain is a free, MIT-licensed addon for procedural terrain generation in Godot 4 .NET using C#. Its node graph editor defines heightmaps, biomes, splatmaps, and scattered instances. Heightmap sources include Perlin, fractal, and Voronoi noise, radial shapes, splines, and images. Modifiers include levels, curves, slope masks, hydraulic and thermal erosion, terraces, beaches, ledges, and blur.
At runtime, the addon evaluates terrain chunks asynchronously on .NET background tasks around a moving camera, then streams heightmaps and control maps into Terrain3D regions. The documented workflow uses a Terrain3D node with a camera or character attached to a terrain streamer to build Godot scenes. Requirements are Godot Engine 4.6 or later in its .NET or Mono edition, .NET SDK 8.0 or later, and the Terrain3D plugin. Setup involves copying the addon into the project’s addons directory, rebuilding the C# solution, and enabling the plugin in Project Settings. Foliage and object scattering can generate placement data, but the feature is experimental. Some GPU-capable work has RenderingDevice compute helpers; the documentation identifies CPU evaluation as the reliable path.
Voxel Plugin
Voxel Plugin is voxel technology for Unreal Engine, with version 2 focused on creating and generating interactive terrain. Worlds can be changed at runtime, and those changes are described as reversible and non-destructive. Terrain is authored with stamps that generate 2D height or 3D volume data; procedural generation is deterministic when the same seeds are used. Voxel Graphs provide node-based control over world generation, but are not included in the Free plan.
The plugin targets Nanite as its main rendering pipeline and supports tessellation and displacement there. Unreal Engine's PCG framework can query voxel terrain and metadata, and PCG graphs can call Voxel Graphs; foliage workflows use PCG rather than direct plugin handling. Voxel Plugin 2 does not support cubic terrain or static, pre-baked world generation. Its documented release targets Unreal Engine 5.6 and 5.7 and is actively being developed, with documentation warning it may be buggy. The Free plan is free; Pro costs $349, paid once and is not for project budgets over $200k.
