Who Gets Credit For AI-Generated Music?

Credit for AI-generated music depends on what “credit” means. In the United States, a person who only prompts an AI is not the author of the resulting music for copyright purposes; a human may claim authorship of original material they contributed, such as lyrics or musical expression, while the AI-generated parts themselves are not copyrightable under the U.S. Copyright Office’s stated position. A platform’s license or a streaming service’s credit label answers different questions: permission to use a track and transparency about how it was made do not automatically establish copyright authorship.

What “Credit” Means For An AI-Generated Song

  • Copyright authorship: Who created protectable human expression in the work. The Copyright Office says prompts alone do not make someone an author; only human-authored parts of a mixed work may be protected.
  • Attribution: Whose name or role is shown in metadata, liner notes, or a public post. A platform may require attribution as a condition of its plan or license.
  • Usage rights: Whether the terms let you publish, monetize, or otherwise use the output. A commercial license is permission under those terms, not proof that the track is copyrightable or exclusively yours.
  • AI disclosure: Whether a distributor or platform requires the use of AI to be identified. That disclosure does not itself decide who authored the human-created elements.

Who Can Claim Authorship?

If the system generated the melody, arrangement, performance, and lyrics from prompts, the prompt writer should not assume they own copyright in the generated expression. The U.S. Copyright Office says works generated entirely by AI are not copyrightable and prompts alone do not establish authorship.

A mixed song can contain both generated and human-authored material. A person who writes original lyrics, composes a melody, or makes other creative contributions may have authorship in those human-created parts, depending on the contribution. The Office says only the human-authored parts of a mixed work can be protected. Its guidance is specific to U.S. copyright; do not treat it as a universal rule for every country.

How To Credit A Song In Practice

  1. Keep a record of your contribution. Save your lyrics, score, recordings, arrangement decisions, and project versions so you can distinguish your work from generated output.
  2. Check the generator’s terms for the plan you used. Confirm whether the track can be used commercially, whether attribution is required, and what the service says about ownership or licensing. A plan’s permission to use a song does not settle copyright authorship.
  3. Use accurate role descriptions. Credit yourself for work you actually did, such as “lyrics by” or “production and arrangement by.” If the service requires attribution, add it in the place and form its terms specify. Don’t label generated material as human-composed.
  4. Follow registration disclosure rules where relevant. For a U.S. copyright registration, applicants must disclose more than a minimal amount of AI-generated material and describe the human author’s contribution.
  5. Check delivery and platform disclosure requirements before release. Spotify supports DDEX AI disclosures in credits. YouTube requires its altered-or-synthetic content label for realistic synthetic content that could be mistaken for a real person’s performance. Requirements can depend on the release and distribution path, so check the current instructions for your upload.

What Music Platforms Say About Rights And Attribution

These examples show why a platform’s usage license, ownership language, and attribution rules should be read separately. They are not legal conclusions about copyright.

Service What The Supplied Terms Say Practical Credit Point
Suno Songs created as a paid subscriber are described as yours to keep and use; the Pro plan is described as including full commercial rights. The Free Plan does not include commercial rights. Do not infer that a paid plan makes AI-generated expression copyrightable. Check the applicable plan terms for your creation.
Eleven Music The service describes tracks as cleared for broad commercial use, while also saying commercial rights vary by subscription tier. Verify the tier’s terms and any exclusions before deciding how to credit or release a track.
Musicful Musicful says it retains ownership of generated tracks and gives downloaders a non-exclusive perpetual license; its terms also say music can be used commercially. A license to use the track is distinct from being its copyright author. Check the applicable terms and any attribution requirement.
Songin.ai Its supplied terms say paid-plan music can be used commercially; free use is personal only and carries no commercial rights. Check the terms for the plan used before release; the stated commercial permission does not itself answer copyright authorship.
Tunee Tunee says generated music belongs to the user and offers a full commercial license; free users may use music for personal projects with attribution. It also says copyright protection is not guaranteed. Follow the free-plan attribution condition where applicable, and distinguish the platform’s license and ownership claims from a guarantee of copyright protection.
Beatoven.ai Beatoven says musicians receive equitable compensation when they contribute music, and that a monetization license is delivered with each download. The supplied information describes contributor compensation and a usage license, but does not establish who is credited as the author of a particular generated track. Check the license delivered with the download.

Voices, Covers, And Samples Need Extra Care

A credit line does not grant permission to imitate a real singer, use a cover arrangement, or include someone else’s recording. Spotify says vocal impersonation is allowed only when the impersonated artist has authorized it. For any voice likeness, cover, sample, or reference recording, get the needed consent and check both the generation service’s and release platform’s terms. The facts here do not establish specific permissions for any particular cover, voice, or sample.

What Credit Cannot Guarantee

Giving a person a “written by” or “produced by” credit does not by itself make generated material copyrightable. Likewise, a commercial-use license does not guarantee that a distributor will accept a release, that a platform will display a particular credit, or that a track is clear of third-party rights. Keep the credit accurate, preserve evidence of your human contribution, and verify current service and destination-platform terms before publishing.
