Jottacloud

Jottacloud is a cloud backup and storage service from Oslo-based Jotta Group AS, serving individuals, households, and businesses. Its broad device coverage and household plans stand out; the Unlimited plan’s speed reduction after 5 TB is a meaningful constraint for heavy uploaders.

Overview

Automatic uploads cover all devices, and file versioning lets users restore older copies. Files retain their original quality, while AI photo search can find images in a timeline from descriptions. Jottacloud stores data in Norway under Norwegian and European privacy laws, and its data center and business operations use renewable hydropower. Business data sent to or from Jottacloud uses 256-bit AES encryption, but the service does not offer zero-knowledge encryption. That makes it a weaker choice for people who require the provider to be unable to access their stored data.

Jotta Group AS has provided cloud storage since 2008 and says Jottacloud has 1.9 million users. Business users also get administration controls, file sharing without a size limit, and direct integration with Microsoft Office Online for collaborative editing.

Key features

Automatic backup and version restoration: Automatic uploads across devices and the ability to restore older file versions make Jottacloud useful for routine backup and recovery. The supplied plans do not establish how long versions are retained.

Photo handling: Files remain uncompressed, and AI search can find photos from a timeline using descriptions. That combination suits people who want to preserve originals and retrieve images by what they show.

Business collaboration: Office Online integration supports collaborative editing, while business administration controls and unrestricted file-size sharing address team workflows. Business plans run from two to unlimited users.

Norwegian data storage: Storage under Norwegian and European privacy laws, alongside hydropower-powered operations, may appeal to users who value those commitments. It does not replace zero-knowledge encryption for users who want provider-inaccessible data.

Pricing

The free tier provides 5 GB for one user and backs up all devices. It is a low-risk way to try the service, but 5 GB is a tight allowance for multiple devices or a growing photo library. A free trial is also offered.

Unlimited: $12.99 a month, billed annually at USD 129.90/year, for one user and unlimited storage. Upload speed is gradually reduced after 5 TB, so this plan is less compelling for sustained heavy uploads.

Home 1 TB: $7.99 a month, billed annually at USD 79.90/year, for five users, 1 TB of storage, and no bandwidth limitation. It is the clearest fit for a household that can share the quota and values unrestricted bandwidth over unlimited storage.

Home 5 TB: Custom pricing for five users and 5 TB of storage. It offers more household capacity than the 1 TB tier, but its cost cannot be compared from the plan price alone.

Pro 10 TB: $29.90 a month, billed annually at USD 299/year, for one user, 10 TB, maximum speed, and commercial use. This is the defined business-oriented option for a single user who needs substantial capacity and speed.

Pro 20 TB and Pro 30 TB: Custom pricing, each for one user, with 20 TB and 30 TB respectively. These tiers target higher-capacity single-user needs, but require a quote rather than a published rate.

The published paid plans use annual billing despite showing a monthly equivalent. No refund policy is stated.

Platforms

Jottacloud supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows. This is broad coverage for users combining desktop and mobile devices, including Linux systems.

Who it's for

Jottacloud is a strong match for households that want five user accounts under a shared storage plan, and for individuals who want automatic backup across a mix of supported devices. Businesses may value administration controls, Office Online collaboration, and sharing files of any size. It is a poor fit for users who require zero-knowledge encryption, and heavy uploaders should weigh the Unlimited plan’s speed reduction beyond 5 TB against the no-bandwidth-limitation Home 1 TB option.

Alternatives

Consider IDrive if a 100 GB tier at $0.25 a month better matches your storage budget; it also has a free tier and trial, and supports web in addition to desktop and mobile platforms. Choose FileCloud instead if you need self-hosted support or a plan with a 20-user minimum and unlimited file upload size. Backblaze Computer Backup is worth comparing if you want unlimited backup data on a paid plan, with a monthly option at $9 a month and a free trial. Pulseway is an alternative for readers seeking configurable endpoints, MDM, and security features with volume discounts. rclone is a free open-source alternative for users comfortable with a free tool rather than a paid storage plan. SpiderOak is another freemium option with Linux, macOS, and Windows support. Data Deposit Box offers a 200 GB backup plan at $20 a month with monthly billing and cancellation flexibility. Duplicati is a free alternative for Linux, macOS, and Windows users whose stated free plan covers up to two machines and the last 200 backups.

Verdict

Choose Jottacloud if you want automatic backup across a broad mix of devices, and especially if five-person household storage or business collaboration is part of the requirement. The Norway-based storage, file versioning, and practical business features make it a rounded option. Look elsewhere if provider-inaccessible encryption is essential or if you expect to upload more than 5 TB at full speed on the Unlimited plan.
